Due to heavy and consistent rains, the swimming pool is currently closed for safety concerns regarding low visibility. Contact the park for more information.
Run off from Lowell I suppose...?

Run off from Lowell I suppose...?

More than likely the spring/cave system blew out and flooded the spring with silt and debre (Phantom cave must be roaring!). This happened in October - November 2004. As soon as we left (when it happened in 2004) Ranger Tom locked the gates and closed the park. Ranger Tom said back then that the state makes them close the park if the visibility does not exceed 3 ft. If they closed the park, you can bet that it's like diving in a lake. When it happened in 2004 there was a funky algea/bacteria growing on the hydrilla that was milky white. In most cases the hydrilla that had the algea growing on it died. Very funky stuff. It's a very different dive site when you can't see your hand in front of you. :) I was helping with a class back then and we taught the class via touch contact.

I snorkled Balmorhea september 13, and the visibility was AWFUL, maybe 3 feet at the surface. No other divers showed up that day, so had to stay on the surface. As an aside, I got sick 2 or 3 days later, extreme sore throat etc, so took antibiotics for several days and am fine now. The waTER "tasted" really bad, you always ingest some and i suspect that's what caused my illness, but who knows

We were just talking about going there over Christmas Break. I wonder if it will be open by then.

From the link given at top...
10/06/08 - San Solomon Springs has reopened for swimming and scuba diving. Visibility is 20 ft. and improving daily. Contact the park for the latest information.
Well, we had Hurricane Norbert break up over west Texas this weekend, followed by a cold front, so the rain is as bad if not worse than then, but then you're talking two months from now. Should be fine, but I'd still check the site closer to the time. Book the park hotel rooms well in advance.
