Hi all , I am going for the first time to Bali at the end of march my first dives will be from Tulamben and I have a 3/2mm , I think thats ok for me at 65f ?, but I do not know what the water temps are at the end of march , can you help ? and how are the currents around Tulamben? Thank you all , rick r.....

I'd be interested to know the same thing, but for the trip to Komodo. I have a Henderson 3 mil and 5/4 pinnacle and don't want to haul both. Can I get away with the 3?

Water temps in Indonesia are quite varied. I carried both a Hyperstretch 3mm and a Pinnacle 5mm. I used both. I think a heavier 3mm would be fine at Tulamben the Henderson just didn't cut it. So you can get by with a 3mm depending what 3 it is. Around Komodo the water got down in the low to mid 70s and I wore the Pinnacle on the 3rd and 4th dives of the day. Nusa Penida is pretty cold and I wore only the 5mm and was thankful for it. I'll probably pack a 3 (replacing the hyperstretch) and a 5 for a return trip.

I dived in Tulamben with 1mm farmerjohn without top. Water temp averages between 27C to 29C so its pretty warm. But Nusa Penida is different. It would be advisable to go at least 3mm, or if you plan to go deeper to about 30+m, suggest you bring a 6mm because if you hit the coldstream, water temp can suddenly plunge to the low 19C. Best to check with your dive centre about local conditions so you are better informed as to what equipment to bring.

However, I have been diving with just 3mm most times without problems, but local divemasters use 6.5mm even in Tulamben....

Well, I do many dives in the 60-70M range and I still never spend more than 10-15 minutes at those depths. Most of my dive is spent above 50M, so I pick my exposure protection for the part of the dive I spend the most time in.

In Komodo off season, I hit a bottom temp of 62F at 110ft, very cold to be sure. But I was only there for 10 minutes, so the 3MM suit was fine...and the diving was unexpectedly exceptional. Am I going to change my suit and weights around for every dive in which I might hit a thermocline? No, it's just plain unsafe to mess around with your bouyancy and mobility just to try and make yourself more comfortable for those few minutes.

I can easily tough it out for a few cold minutes and I value the familiarity, ease of movement and general comfort of diving with less weights and a thinner suit, much more than I do being a little shivery for a few minutes...

Neither here nor Komodo it doesn't get so warm that you will overheat, but it can get cold (as other posters have mentioned). I'd bring the 5/4.

Thanks BF. That's what I was afraid of, but the 5/4 it is. Dove it in the Galpagos in January and it was more than enough. Komodo Dancer in June and really looking forward to it.

Thanks Mike now I think I will even take my 2mm half suit have a great day..
