We don’t have near as much NE Bali experience as a lot of folks here, but are en route for a second stay at Villa Markisa. It’s a small (nine unit), secluded resort outside of Tulamben which overlooks its house reef, the fantastic Seraya Secrets, and has a couple of good boats for easy access to beat the crowds to the wreck and other Tulamben sites, plus nightly blackwater dives if two or more want to pay for it (I think around $65 per person). Each villa or room has a guide assigned, so there’s 1-2 divers per guide, and there are very good camera facilities. There’s an excellent pool, good food served family style, and of course Seraya is top-shelf black-sand diving. The owner lives on site and is an enthusiastic expert in nudibranchs and all the things.

Boats yes, but no dock—wading to and from the boats can be tricky, but all gear is managed by the guides and plenty of helpful arms are available if needed.

We’ve spent the weekend at Andaz Bali, a Hyatt property on Sanur Beach, close to the airport. Zero complaints.
