Thanks again people. The buzz word in your posts for me is "Hammerhead". Ever since I was a kid I have been fascinated by them but have only seen them in documentary film clips and photos. As I said, only one live in the Red Sea and that was quite a way off. Therefore, if Galapagos offers a good chance of seeing a few close-up, it would be very tempting...

Hammerheads ? You want hammerheads ? A chance to see hammerheads ?

In another thread I posed the question wondering how many people who raved about the Galapagos had been to the Soccorros? You'll get schooling hammerheads there (I saw far more than in the Galapagos where I spent most of my trip at Wolf/Darwin) at half the price, far easier to get to, more included dives on your liveaboard, etc. Galapagos for me is overhyped and ridiculously expensive.

I have not been to Soccorros. Sounds like I have to add it to my must dive list. When did you go and what boat did you dive with ?

I went in August 2009. Amazing trip. Everything I had hoped for and more. Additional videos from the trip in my signature link. If Soccoros is like what I saw in Galapagos, it will have to be my next trip. When did you go and who did you dive with ?

Nature versus culture. If the trip is about diving and nature, then Galapagos for sure. Bali is a whole 'nuther animal, in my opinion. I loved my Komodo liveaboard, but we had an equal amount of fun just exploring Bali and neighboring islands and doing non-diving things.

Season for the Socorros is November-May..the two times I've gone have been in December or January. Sometimes you can still have 80 degree water temps early in the season, which is also the best time for whale sharks (although Socorros is not as "known" for WS as the Galapagos is in season). Two likely things you'll get in the Socorros vs Galapagos are multiple dives with dolphins and many encounters with giant mantas..in addition to saving a ton of money, travel time, etc. Boat I've gone on is probably the least well know...Sea Escape...but at least 4 others make the trip.

I'd second Lorenzoid's thought about land activities in Bali. However, if you are already doing Raja Ampat, then Komodo is very similar. I thought that RA was a bit better but it was a close race. Anything sharks besides wobbegong and white tips will be somewhat unusual in RA while mantas can be plentiful. Places in RA were just as fishy as RonScuba's video above but without the hammerheads. It only took 30 seconds of his video to decide that Galapagos was worth going to! Being in CA, I'm quite interested to hear that the Soccorros is a close comparison.

My wife and I are in the process of planning a trip in January to the Galapagos. How do you think it would compare with the Soccorros at that time of year?

I have heard that Socorro is sometimes called the "Mexican Galapagos". I would like to consider it as an alternative if I am unable to make it to the Galapagos and the cost is significantly less. Also, I believe there is a choice of 3 liveaboard boats.
But looking at various we pages and articles by divers, I am confused as to the best time of the year to dive in Socorro to see Hammerhead Sharks. A few reports say that November to April offer the best dive conditions and yet another article seems to suggest April to June is the best time for Hammerheads. Can someone please tell me the right answer? Thanks in anticipation.
