i am planning a honeymoon and probably going to jamiaca or bahamas. i have never been on a dive trip so i am wondering what these locations offer for diving. thanks, derek

Well we've been to Jamaica and will never go back.

I'm prepared for many to disagree, as many on SB have expressed having enjoyed diving there, but it's definitely the worst I've seen in the Caribbean. The opps weren't well equipped, and the reefs were pretty tore up.

The island itself was tough to take too. We enjoyed our resort, but found it very difficult to walk outside the walls. Like I said, we've been to a dozen or so locations in the Caribbean, and enjoy the mood and culture usually, but in Jamaica it felt like a constant assault.

I've also heard from friends recently that they've enjoyed their trips their, but they were all describing enclosed high end resorts, with no expossure to the outside world.

What about some of the smaller islands? St. Kitts, Nevis, St. Barts, Saba, BVI, etc.

All have excellent diving and an atmosphere I'd much rather spend my honeymoon in.

St. Barts is in a league of its own.

thanks for the reply. we are staying in a sandals resort that is about an hour from the closest thing so leaving the resort isnt really even an option. we already booked in jamiaca but i was thinking about changing to bahamas if it is worth it.

Wow...I have such a different opinion of Jamaica...we've been 5 times and already planning our 6th...it really depends on which part of Jamaica you're going to and which city you'll be staying in...I've been to Montego Bay and won't ever stay there again. I've been to Ocho Rios twice and like it, but it's become too touristy due to all the ships that dock there. We've also been to Negril twice and love it!! Nothing bad to say about it and this is the location for time #3!!!

im staying in the sandals whitehouse which is about an hour from negril but it uses the similiar dive spots. its completely secluded where the resort is. they just built it over the last year or two. should i just stick with my original plan? thanks.

I've never been to that Sandals, so I know nothing about the resort itself. As far as Negril goes, we love it...we love the beaches and the lushness of the greenery there. Although tourism is the island's #1 industry, it hasn't impacted Negril in the same way as Ocho Rios, as there are no ship docks in Negril (but I'm waiting for that day to come someday...then we'll have to look for another island! LOL)...

I've never dove Negril as I just got my certification last year, but I've heard the diving in Negril is much nicer than Ocho Rios due to the less tourist population. I've snorkeled Negril and love it!! Can't wait to dive there!!

I can't tell you whether you should stay/leave, but I know many people who love Negril and wouldn't tell you differently...Hope this helps!

Honeymooned a sandals (about an hour from the airport) in Jamaica Man! My wife and I loved it! We will return, it's been 10 years so cant remember the name, we also took the shuttle to several other resorts for dining....I do remember that the Monteigo Bay?? resort was A BIG PARTY PLACE and we were glad that we did not stay there, we just were not into that as into ourselves....GREAT trip and we are planning a BEACHES vacation soon (so we can take the kids) go....go.....go.....man.....Jimbo

That would've been either Negril or Ocho Rios as they are both a little more than an hour from Mo' Bay and Sandals are both heavily represented in both cities! ;)

Do the Bahamas, great vis. amazing people in or out of the water!
Been there and would go back tomorrow.
Have a great trip.
R.H.

I've been to both islands. And it seems each year I go back to both islands. For a honeymoon, where diving is secondary, JAMAICA MON! Yeah, the diving is better in the bahamas, but with Sandals being an all inclusive (bring your c card AND log book), you will have the time of your lives! Don't think twice about your choice.
