I have bad knees, but I don't know how they have gotten that way. I have been diagonsed with Chondra Malasia (the cartiledge under my knee caps is wearing down). I'm going to have Orthoscopic surgery in December to shave down the worn cartiledge.

Could I have gotten this from diving? I do use a modified flutter when diving cuz I cave dive. Also I have heard recovery time from surgery to be 1-3 months, so when can I expect to be diving again? Currently I will just be getting my left knee worked on, but I can tell already that in the future I'll be getting the right knee done as well.

Can someone please shed some light on this for me.

Thanks!!

I was diagnosed with the same thing, and that is what ended my Military Career. From my understanding it comes from abusing your knees, doing stuff like jogging, and what not.

I would hazard a Guess that SCUBA helps, not harms this Ailment.

Here is a Link that talks about it. http://healthlink.mcw.edu/article/926052680.html

According to my Med sheet, I have been confined to a wheel chair since 1993. The doctors wanted to cut, I told them to take a Hike..

I do yearly hikes to 10,000+ with my dad with no pain, and no wheelchair.

I have Dislocated my Left leg twice, and my right leg once. I have chunks of Cartilige floating around that I have to push out of the way to kneel every once in a while.

It was helpful. I don't know how I ended up with this cuz I don't run, bike, or anything like that. The pain started in March after I started dry caving, but I don't go often enough to cause this I don't think. I went thru a month of physical therapy to strengthen my leg muscles, but it didn't help, so I'll do some shots and then have the surgery in December after my trip to Mexico.

I was hoping to find someone that did the surgery so I know what to expect.

Thanks again.

Wendy,

you think it has anything at all to do with lugging twins around? I'm in construction and in some of the back safety training sessions I've been to, it's amazing the amount of pressure exerted on the lower back just bending over with NO weight. Add 20 pounds and it is extreem. I can only guess at the amount of stress your knees had on them with the weight you have carried around.
Hopes and prayers for a speedy and full recovery,

tony

I refused the surgery. Otherwise I could give you some insights. Sorry I can't be of any more help. Other then, There is someone else out there who feels your pain!

Wendy,
I've not dealt with your specific injury, but I did have ACL replacement surgery 4 months ago. I had PT before my surgery and after, and attacked it to get the most I could out of it.

I finished PT 6 weeks after my surgery, which was about 2 months ahead of schedule. 4 months after surgery, I'm at 95% and lugging doubles around. I'm not cleared for full activity for another 2 months. But the attitude I took into PT got me very very far.

Go in, get built up prior to surgery, attack it after surgery; and you'll be back in the water in no time flat.

I use big tanks as well (steel 104 and 98) and had my back give up on me earlier this year. Going to the gym to strenghten my back and knees cured a lot of the trouble. I'm going to doubles next year, so I will make sure that I'm ready for the extra weight over the course of my training over the Winter.

Keep us posted on how you're doing. Ditto for your trip in Mexico.

K.
