Hi, I have a question. My friend was working underwater and descended to 150 feet way too fast. His ears popped or whatever and it screwed his hearing and sense of taste/smell. Is this damage irrwversible?

Don't you think that this question should be asked to a specialist physician in his office or clinic after proper exam instead of wasting time here??

He needs to see a specialist ear doctor about this IMMEDIATELY.

The prognosis is usually fairly good but there are complications like infections that can happen without adequate medical treatment that could make recovery slow and painful (literally).

For the moment he has not not go diving at ALL and see a doctor ASAP.

After he recovers, if he intends to dive again, I would recommend some remedial training because what happened to him was avoidable provided it was taught proper descending technique. Without remedial training there is a definite risk of a repeat.

WOW, I am surprised that the OP caught so many his first time out! Nice job troll. Seriously? Am I the only one so jaded that it is all I can do not to shout B.S.??? 1st post, no background, no details....really? Read the post....it is fraught with so much for us to slam on. Ok...let's play....150 ft??? Wtf I guess your "friend" was in a diving bell with mixed gasses? Next?

I thought this might be a version of "asking for a friend", in which the OP did this foolishness to himself, has no insurance and is hoping the dive elders could recomend a home cure of stuffing the ears with beeswax and powdered pufferfish pokers to make the consequences go away smartly.

working? what was he working on that he had a sudden descent like that?

It was something with cleaning on an offshore oil rig. I just met this guy and he's from Mexico and hasn't seen a good doctor about it and his English is pretty ******. I found this forum on Google and posted the brief question to see if anyone could shed some light on it.

He has a persistent sinus infection that he said came in after that, I dont know if they are related or anything. I have no clue about this stuff, I have never gone diving In my life and all i know is that you aren't supposed to descend or ascend too fast, and that's about it. Also he said it happened a few years ago and I don't think he had any real treatment for it.

I guess the chronic sinus infection is the worst of it, but I'd say the diminished taste and smell would be pretty bad too.

Thanks for any help or direction that any of you can provide.
