Hi,

I've just purchased my first dive computer (my final piece of equipment) and started to ask myself: "What if strap breaks or gets loose?"

Do you use any kind of "backup straps" for your (hand mounted) computers?

I attached a loop of bungee cord to my computer for this. If the strap breaks it will hang but it wont drop.

How did you attach that cord to your computer? Did you put it behind those spring bars or ...?

How you do that will depend on what your computer looks like. My computer is an older one with a square shape and I managed to attach it with a small tiewrap. I wouldn't attach it under the pins (spring bars) because a pin breaking is what you're planning for.....

Why don't you post a picture of your computer. Maybe I can give you a couple of ideas.

Thx, I've got Suunto Vyper. The spring bar idea seamed bad to me also. I thought of drilling a hole in that plastic boot.

If you can get the computer out of the boot then thats a good idea. Drill two small holes and thread a piece of thin bungee through them (up and then out) and tie off. You might want to put a drop of something like aquaseal over the holes when you're done to stop the boot from tearing.

Good luck.

Use a lanyard of the type sold for lights and such. The line end gets looped through a hole in the strap above the hole used for the buckle; if need punch one, put rubber part of lanyard over wrist tighen up then buckle the strap on. I have Vyper I found at a popular dive site from someone who didn’t use a backup lanyard or bungee.

Here in the North East Pacific with 5mm gloves and neoprene drysuits women have a bear of a time with wrist mounted computers, their wrist is often as wide as their hand and it’s easy to lose computers or compasses worn on the wrist with suit compression at depth etc.

as i've said in a post some days ago, waterborne straps have the same design as regular NATO straps, but are made of thicker material. i've found regular NATO too thin and unconfortable to wear...

you can find them at www.timefactors.com and a lot of other places.
