There isn't any information about your diving in your profile, so I may be way off base here, but I'm assuming that since you don't seem to have much experience fitting a backplate, you aren't planning to do a technical dive right away. If that's true, is there another BC you could use? If you have an old jacket style or back inflate BC or are able to rent one, I'd go that route for your trip rather than use a backplate that you know isn't fitting you properly.

I think the wetsuit does make it marginally better. But now I look like a real idiot, sitting at my computer in shortie wetsuit, and full BC outfit. In the dead of Michigan winter, no less.

I am a very DIY person, I just am feeling that if I make a bad mistake, I dont have time to get it fixed.

Yeah, I think the deal is (assuming you have a large enough break) that its a one-shot deal. You can't really bend it back. I tried bending one where it was already bent and was unsuccessful but a longer plate with bent corners sounds great.

I chose and purchased all my BP/W gear because it dosnt take up as much space. I hate carrying two checked bags plus carry-on in the airport, so with the BP/W, its much more space-conservative. Plus, I am all about keepin it super-simple, and this is right up my alley.
I think the hammerhead plate is a real winner, I might check it out after I get back from my trip.

digs into your pelvis when you're standing erect, right?

In the water you'll be horizontal and it probably won't be that noticeable. Unless you're doing extended hikes on land while geared up, maybe it's not that big of an issue...

Correct, into my pelvis. I am thinking that it wont be a deal in the water, Ill just have to keep hunched over a little bit. Its boat dives, so there wont be a great deal of walking involved.

Im going outside to shoot some guns to calm my nerves.

What he said. Loosen your belt a little and have a good trip. The thing kind of dives itself.

I think this is true ... once you're in the water it shouldn't be a problem ...

I dive a Dive Rite backplate and notice a tad "digging" from the corners when on land...once in the water, the whole rig disappears. Go dive!

Just an afterthought, but you could add a backplate pad, if you jsut need a little extra cushion. As others have said, though, once you are in the water you probably won't notice it at all!

Have a great trip!
