my LDS.....has suggested for a BP/W that could be used in place of the scuaba pro's nighthawk

Last I checked, the ScubaPro NightHawk is a non-modular back-inflate system....not a true BPW system.

Either way, the link below is to a Dive Rite package for $300 for an Alu plate, 25# singles wing, single-piece-webbing harness, crotch strap, and tank straps. You can't go wrong. ESPECIALLY if your LDS sells Dive Rite, I'd give them a chance to make money. I'd bet that if you take a printout of that link to your LDS and tell them that you want to buy that, but want to support your LDS.....and will if they can match the price, then I'd bet they'd match the price and have you on your way. I worked at an LDS and recommended people do that. You get a good deal, they get a sale that would've gone online otherwise. Win-win.

There are many shops that will attempt to push the "soft bak" BC, and say that as a "back-inflate", that is is everything you want in a bp/wing and more.....but this is NOT TRUE..... It would be a system that is easy to get a "sloppy" "fit" with...so that in 10 seconds the Back Inflate is as ideal as it gets, for you. From a service side at a high volume shop that does not care about anything but profit, this is a no-brainer for them....

If you try on a real bp/wing system, whether the Dive Rite or the Halcyon, or Oxycheck, etc., there is much more to the first time fit.....but get the fit perfect, and the results can't be compared....

Think of a Tuxedo rental without alterations....and think of a custom fitted Tux you would buy.... ( or a gown depending on who you are or where you live:-)

There is no comparing the look and feel of the custom Tux to the nasty Junior Prom style Tux with no real alterations.

The differences in the back inflate and a system like a Halcyon bp/wing are MUCH BIGGER!

Thanks Victor, There does seem to be pretty affordable ways to start with BP/W Set ups. I do find myself liking the HOG and the Dive rite.

If you like Hog. ...shoot Jim Lapenta a PM.

Let us know what you end up getting and how you like it.

That makes perfect sense Dan, I'm pretty sure that when It's time to buy, It's going to be a BP/W for me. I also found out which dive shops are renting which types or BC's so that I can try each style. So Class starts in 12 days. Woo Hoo.

Hog is having a 15% off sale so you can save some coin if you buy now. If you do not buy now, the next sale is usually during Black Friday.

Will Do Victor.

It's probably going to be closer to black friday If I go with HOG,

There is a nice Apeks SS plate FS in the classifieds. And if your patient you can sometimes get deals.

There is a nice Apeks SS plate FS in the classifieds. And if your patient you can sometimes get deals. Also check Craigslist, I know in SD there is a guy who has a complete DSS medium rig FS for like $350.

I checked out the deals at DGX. I notice that shoulder padding is an available option with their rigs. I've also noticed some of the Scubapro bpw models have padding as well. Is this a recommended feature? I thought one of the perks of BPW was that it does away with padding to minimize buoyancy?

No, the padding is often not recommended. IMO totally unnecessary.
