:dazzler1: And lived to tell the tale. The main purpose of our trip was to take the Boy Scouts sailing. I was able to have one day's diving thrown in. Our crew of 19 was augmented by an additonal member who met us there.

We picked up two sailboats in Miami on Saturday afternoon and headed to Key West at first light Sunday morning. Winds were 10 to 15 knots (apparently half of what they had been for the previous month). 30 hours later we were moored at Sand Key, off Key West, snorkling. We tied up at Key West's marina that afternoon and spent a few hours around town, watching the sun go down and doing the tourist thing.

The next day we sailed to Bahia Honda State Park. The winds had been falling off since the start of our trip and were mostly calm for our second day. We used the motor a lot. More snorkling at Pellican Shoals along the way.

Wednesday morning our shuttle picked up 10 of our crew and headed to Captain Hook's dive center. Myself and the other certified diver dove two tanks that morning and the rest started the PADI Discover Scuba course. After a hurried lunch, we went out with the class and did two more dives.

The dives were shallow (24' max) and it was my partner's first dives after receiveing his C-card. For his first dives in saltwater it worked out great for him...and me, too. Fishlife was abundant. Eventhough yellow grunts aren't very exciting, it is still cool to be in the middle of several hundred of them. Saw a spotted moray, decent sized black groupers at a cleaning station, one really nice sized queen angel and a nurse shark, amongst others. Viz was 30 to maybe 50 feet.

All in all a good day's diving under very stress free conditions. My buddy and I were joined by a Divemaster and one other diver in the morning and were the only certified diver in the PM. Our shipmates in the Discover Scuba class filled the rest of the boat, so once we got away from them, we had a really relaxing, uncrowded experience.
The winds were CALM and we had little current to deal with.

The next day the winds picked up to 15 knots gusting to 25 and stayed that way for the rest of our trip back to Miami.

The weather was great! No rain, clear to partly cloudy skys, highs of 80 and lows around 70 all week. It was calm when we wanted to dive, and windy when we wanted to sail!

Captain Hooks' dive center personel were great. The class was well supervised, with 3 divemasters/instructors in the water. They arranged transportation to and from the dive center, and were helpful in every way. Their boat is bigger than some and could get crowded, but it did not work out that way for us.

Oh yes, I ate Key Lime pie at least once every day! :crafty:

The little fish market/restaurant next door to Captain Hooks and the Marathon Lady Fishing charter in Marathon is the best key lime pie I have ever had in the whole world.

The Owners are two brothers who used to run the Grassy Key Dairy bar which is no longer around and you now have made me very hungry.

Glad to see you had a good time - sounds like an awesome adventure!!!!.

>The little fish market/restaurant next door to Captain Hooks...

I'm sorry I don't remember the names of the two resturants we visited on Marathon. The two were the only reasonably priced places we patronized on the whole trip.

The one next to Capt. Hooks served up the best fish sandwich I've ever had! Worth visiting for sure! Sorry I didn't have the pie there, but I was diving again soon.

We dined at the "shrimp shack" adjacent to Burdine's marina. Once again outstanding. They had an all you can eat peel-and-eat special, but they lied. I couln't eat 'em all! Also their version of the honey bun (light fried yeast bread lumps the size of a small biscuit you dip in honey) were straight from heaven. Our tour leader said he ate there once 20 years ago and then searched for it for the next ten years before finding it agin. It was worth the effort.

There is a resturant at Burdine's that is reported to serve the best hamburger in the Keys. I do know they made the best Key Lime pie I ate on the trip. Traveler's tip: Buy the whole pie for $14. It's worth it!

My experience at Marathon Key was the highlight of my trip, diving-wise, dining-wise, and friendly-people-wise! I'm certainly up for heading back again, soon.

Marathon has always been the spot where we have stayed for years as it's a good half way point to explore the keys.

We often find it's fairly economical to rent a house as its no more expensive than a decent hotel room and much more comfy.

Another place we like to go is Herbies for conch fritters and the Wooden spoon for breakfast.

Lots of good memories from Marathon...

We spent last week on Marathon. Rented a house (3 bdrm) across the road, and across Vaca Cut from Capt. Hooks. No beach, but the kids could play under the dock of the house with their snorkel gear.

We bought lots of fish and had lots of meals at Fish Tales, the fish restaurant just south of Capt Hooks. Best in the Keys for food (not much on ambiance).

My 12 year old was certified at Cpt Hooks - can't thank Jan and everyone else there enough. He's in Scouts and looking forward to the SeaBase camp when he's 14.

The folks at Cpt Hooks are great. My 2 younger boys would go in the afternoon to feed the tarpon, grouper, eels & rays they keep in their pond west of the shop. The guides were relaxed, the service was wonderful, and we had MAJOR luck on the weather. Dove the TBolt in the calmest conditions I've seen.

A great trip was we rented a little 21' boat and headed out to Sombrero Reef, picked up a mooring, and our 6 and 9 year old snorkeled for 3 hours - saw lots of 'cuda, grouper, snapper (of course) a few rays and a big 'ol nurse shark. They wanted to stay an extra week.

I am curious about what people think is the best location for scuba diving at the Keys?

Key Largo, Marathon, or Key West?

My wife is not an advanced diver, so we would need to stick to the easier sites. So that rules out the Tortugas, and some of the shipwrecks.

I am leaning towards the Marathon area. Any thoughts?

There's easy (shallow, little current) diving throughout the Keys - the diving is somewhat similar in terms of conditions, based upon what you need/want (anywhere you go can give you shallow dives, etc).

My experience (I am sure Key's regulars may disagree) is that the weather is spotty during most of the year making diving a day-to-day decision in terms of where to go. In our week, we went from 70' viz, to 20' viz to 40' viz, in 6 days.

My son thoroughly enjoyed his first experience, having seen a wreck (Flagler's Barge) and numerous reef heads - all in less than 30' of water (our deepest with him was 28'). However, the wife and I dove the TBolt in 115'. All of these were 30-40 minute rides from Marathon.

I tend not to stay in Key West anymore - with family and kids, the attractions are less and the price is too high. Looe Key / Big Pine are great spots in the southern Keys. We tend toward Marathon just for convenience and cuz we now know folks and restaurants and it is a bit off the path for most vacationers (lots of fishing vacationers).

Glad you had a super time and that the weather cooperated with you for the trip. I've heard it's been quite windy down there recently. I just got back from a week of more cave diving in north Florida...you know the places. Stop in and say hi at the shop some time...bring photos from the trip. See you at the quarry soon.

Great report. Now we need to get a local trip up so we can all meet around here. :D
