Just be sure that you do not heat the regulator to cure the finish. I do not know the effects of heating on brass, but care is indicated.

I'm not sure I'd have the breathing passage painted.
I was thinking more of the front outside portion.
I would think that a nice clear coat or clear epoxy finish would hold up and prevent the paint from peeling or flaking.

(Mental image) front metal rings of old SP 108's or 109's or perhaps the old Dacor or USD Calypso regs.

Just an idea.

I have been toying with the same idea. I have a couple of 109's that have very pitted chrome...thought I might strip the exterior chrome, especially on the outer cover, polish it and lacquer it like a musical instrument.

You would do a full rechrome. There are places in most locals that can do the work, especially those that specialize in custom cars, motorcycles etc. I have had a few done local but sent my Voit Navy and Voit MR12 to another shop. There is also --possibly--a rechromer that can be contacted through vdh.

The chrome will be stripped, the entire piece will be rechromed using a modern process, it can run from about 75 to several hundred dollars. Powder coating is also a very durable finish but it's thickness can interfere with parts fit thus requires individual evaluation.

When not diving and on the job I have some involvement in this area.
We do a good bit of metal work and finish work on Airstream Trailers.
You dont want to breathe any particles from metal finishes.
Go the rechrome route. There are quite a few good quality companies
that do chroming and it really isnt as expensive as many think.
Much safer on your lungs too.

This thread is pretty old. But since I last posted on it, I've had a couple of SP 109s re-chromed and I must admit the chrome looks better than new. Probably more durable too as the process was: copper plated, nickle plated, chrome plated.....it was expensive, but in my view worth it.

I would still like to see what a stripped down then lacquered 109 would look like.

Beautiful -109's couv! Wow!!!

A stripped, polished and lacquered -109 would probably be stunning.... post the pictures when you do it!!

Best wishes.
