What is everyones feeling regarding Auto Closure Device on 1st stage? How important a feature is this in choosing a regulator?

Well, if you are like my wife and enjoy dunking your regulator in salt water without the protective cap in place or dragging it through the sand etc. I would say, yes, it is important. And yes, it works, at least on the AL Legend series.

I, m much more careful than that. Actually fix med . Equipment for living, and have habit of overchecking things. But how efficient are the dust covers , " really " ? What happens if some moisture does get into 1 st stage inlet ?

Some dust caps are better than others. For DIN regs, you have an o-ring in the reg and the dust cap pushes against that o-ring, making an airtight seal. For yoke regs, there's also some dust caps with a built-in o-ring, giving you the same kind of seal. YMMV with other style yoke dust caps and while generally they work well, some of them I don't trust for things like post-dive soaking in fresh water.

Having once lost the dust cap on one of my regs in a dunk tank I can say I wish it had the AL seal thingy. When I dive yoke, I'm now in the habit of dunking the tank with the regulator still on and pressurized.

As dfx said if you're din it's not really an issue. DIN caps screw on tight to the O-ring and you get a watertight seal.

Notice that it's called a "dust" cap and not a "water" cap.

With dust cap in place, inhale, if you can draw breath it's not sealing. Every reg I've ever owned seals. Of course YMMV.

I can't inhale from mine with the inlet wide open. I don't think this is a good test.

What regulator do you dive? Certainly with the Aqualung, Apeks and HOG regs I've owned this has not been my experience. Cheers.
