I usually dive Texas lakes and rivers (or sites in the Caribbean). Lately, I find myself working in this part of the country. I would like to do some dives while I am here, but I don't have cold water gear. I have a 3mm shorty and a 2/3 mm wetsuit. My regulator is not cold water-rated.

What kind of water temperatures are you seeing at 30 ft?
What kind of water temperatures are you seeing at 60 ft?
What kind of water temperatures are you seeing at 90 ft?
What kind of water temperatures are you seeing at 110 ft?

Is anyone using a wetsuit (as opposed to a drysuit)? If so, what thickness?

Thanks!

Off Ocean City, MD last Saturday, it was a balmy 54 degrees at 90' - no way to dive the ocean around here in the wetsuits that you have. If you see wetsuits on the local boats, they are usually 7mm john/jacket combos or something thicker. You might be able to stand the local quarries is you stay very shallow - above the first thermocline.

Cold.
Colder.
Sub-zero.
Artic.
Can't go deeper due to solid ice below 110ft.

I dive with a 1mm skin, 7mm semi-dry, and on top a 3mm farmer john jacket, sometimes the bottoms as well. I use a 3/2mm swimming cap type hood. What's the point of diving in this anyway? Good question. I was just testing out some gear. If you come here don't waste your time on the dismal diving in cold, murky water (Canyon Lake (TX) isn't much better though!) Get a charter that takes you out into the Gulf stream off the Outer Banks. The wreck diving is pretty good.

I set the record for AL80 endurance @ 40 feet: 8 minutes, 10 seconds.

Heh, heh. And 30CF of that were probably sucked up during the first two seconds after hitting our quasi-tepid NJ waters.
