Last year it was the Summer of the Shark. This year jellyfish are making news. Has this affected any of the diving in the south? California (La Jolla) had a Summer Day of the Shark a week ago. Any of you catch the news of the Leopard Sharks massing at the beach? Snorkel rentals skyrocketed.

Do you think thismight bring some kind of "ban jellyfish feeding" action? ;)

Since May, I've spent pretty much every weekend at La Jolla diving. I have yet to see a jellyfish. So I'm not sure there is an epidemic, but I did hear about the Leopard Sharks. They were around the Marine Room. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to get down there to see them, although I know several people that did.

When I said "the south" I meant Florida and the Gulf region.

Must be Gulf side thing. I've been hard pressed to even see jellyfish the on my past few dives. Though drifting plastic bags have fooled me a couple of times.

Two weeks ago I was in Mexico Beach, FL (panhandle). We had alot of Moon? jellies. Sperical, about the size of a softball +/-. They were in the deep part of the channel between the beach and the sand bar flowing west in a 1/2 naut. longshore current. They weren't any trouble unless you tried to go out to the sand bar though. With polarized sunglasses you could see them from the beach. I learn the value of polarized sunglasses the hard way.

I was just wondering how moon jellies could be trouble??? They do not sting you, I play with them quite often. Now if it had been Lion's Mane jellyfish I could see a problem (unfortunately, I KNOW they sting :)).
