Hello -

I have an Atomic Z2 which I have used in tropical waters only. I would like to take it to dive in Tobermory Canada where u/w water temp can be close to 40. Would my Z2 hold its ground in colder waters? Or do I need a new reg?

It is not sealed , is it ? If so you need to know how to handle it correctly in cold water not to overwork it so it does not freeze.

I think it can be environmentally sealed. I have either the Z1 or Z2 (I can't remember which) and now that I dive Lake Michigan I had it sealed. It costs some but a lot less than a new reg, and it has performed flawlessly even in 38 degree water.

You do not need a new reg. Z2 can be environmentally sealed. Next time you have it serviced ask them to seal it. Figure $50 for parts (a new ring around the first stage, a tube of cristolube or other 02 compatible lube) and labor.

Personally, I have dove my Atomics in 46 degree water and they worked fine. If 40 degree water is going to be the lower limit I would probably not bother getting them sealed. But I would also not plan some deep dark dive.

PS all atomic regs can be sealed.

I have stupidly dove mine for 30mins before aborting the dive due freezing my A$$ off in a 7mm wetsuit, 2mm gloves, and 5mm boots in 39°F water without it being sealed, and was fortunate enough that It did not freeze, but its a wise idea to get it sealed...

Isn't it the first stage that needs sealing rather than the second stage which is the Z2 bit or am I missing something?

If it is simply the Z2 Second Stage you will be fine. If it is the Z2 Reg 1st/2nd then I would say go get it sealed and it should do fine. I have an Atomic M1 set sealed. I also have a ScubaPro MK17/G250v That I use As the MK17 is a true sealed and alot less likely to freeze.

Send the unit to Atomic Aquatics and let them pack the 1st stage with the seal kit. That way you'd know for sure that it gotten done right.
