You can screw up the nut pretty easily using a wrench if it slips off it. In the old days it was not a big deal because it was just a $5 nut. With the Atomic is the complete Yoke assembly which can set you back $40+. My suggestion is get the socket - that said if you buy it through your local shop they should install it for free. I know mine would - of course I service my own regs so we BS instead.

BTW if you are successful from most of the parts you can make a DIN-to-Yoke adapter just by buying a couple of parts rather than the complete adapter:
