Does an Atomic second stage require and atomic first stage for best performance? Does the Atomic second stage really "know" when its not connected to an Atomic first?
I have tried the Atomic second (ZZ) on Apeks and Dive Rite First stages so far with no avail. Simply put, it is a lousy breather on both these first stages. It's a brand new reg. Did I get a fluke or does it need an Atomic fist stage?
Thanks in advance.

Probably not, I expect it needs to be adjusted correctly for the 1st stage you are using.

I have the IP set to 140 on both first stages I have tried. That is Atomic's factory spec.

If you're talking about the SS1, it may need to be adjusted (or your first stage may need service).

It's a very nice reg and you shouldn't have any problems with it.

Sounds like you got a bad one. Atomic has a pretty good warranty program from what I hear. Although I have never had to make use of it.

I'd take it back. Depending on the shop, they might just switch out for you. I had a problem with a Zeagle reg I purchased from local shop that deals in Atomic. My Zeagle checked out ok on their bench, but they just switched out the reg. I had not yet sent in the registration.

Atomic may not be as easy to work with as Zeagle though. Good luck.

As long as the second stage "sees" the proper pressure from the first stage, it doesn't care who made the first stage.

The Atomic second stage may be capable of delivering a higher volume of air than the other brand's first stage is capable of delivering. In that case, it would tend to get harder to breathe once the first stage's max volume is reached. I think that this volume is above most people's normal breathing volume (barring emergency or other stressful situations at depth).

I would suspect that the Atomic second stage in this thread needs to be adjusted.
