You can also just switch out the Ti parts of the B2 later....

The B2 has a Ti air barrel and Ti orifice, and if you switch those out to a Zirconium/Palladium plated brass barrel (used in the M1 and Z2) and stainless steel orifice(M1), it's going to be internally identical to an M1 second stage. And it's going to cost you a lot.
If switching out parts is a possibility, then might as well get the M1 from the beginning.
But as I said above, you can use the B2 as your backgas reg when the time comes without switching anything.

Yup, but the point remains, IF he gets the B2, he CAN convert it to a deco reg. Not sure WHY you'd go this route, but you can...

If you're new to scuba, buying an extra reg because you're getting into tech will be the least of your worries (and expenses).

If you like the Atomics, go buy one :)

One caveat on having some regs restricted to <40%, you forego interchangeability, there is a tangible - albeit small - benefit to having all your regs O2 service capable.

The b2 are fine for tech as long as there sealed units .One of my frends used his in the cenotes in mexico he was a guide has 1000 dives on them no issues i use an m1- z2 on my back gas i do mostly deep wrecks in the great lakes work fine for me

I am relatively new to diving but I want to get a reg that will be good enough to use for tech diving in the future, as I plan to take more classes and get into tech diving. How would you rate the Atomic B2 for this?

Thanks,
We are an Atomic dealer and I can personally assure you that you will be happy with any Atomic reg that you purchase. The B2 is a great reg that you can use up to 40% oxygen. When you go tech you can add a M1 to your collection that you can dedicate to tech diving. You will probably still have many uses for your B2 for hang tanks, bailout bottle, spare, etc. The B2 and M1 are both mid-priced regs in the Atomic line.

I should add that after three years of hard diving my B2 has failed in all three assertions (fail, kill, dork).

Except maybe that last one... :D

I love my B2 and my M1. . . and my SP R190. . . and my other regs. . . OHH BTW My B2 is on a 7Ft hose without swivel. . . I put the swivel on the SP. . .
