Hello new to the board and had a question on my new Atomic B1 regulator and having it sealed. I do most of my diving in New England in 50F water and have been told that it might be a good idea to have the first stage environmentally sealed.

Is this something I should worry about?

Thank you

Dan

Hi from anouther mass. native!
Funny you asked this question!
I asked the same thing last week at LDS(merrimack aquatics meuthen) I have a atomic z1 he said It was not needed.
hope this helps Rick L

Yes, I was told that it was not really needed either, but that when the instructor at my LDS brought his B1 in for the 2 year service there was a lot of dubree in the 1st stage that having it sealed would have prevented.

He did say that the sand/silt whatever did not at all interfere with his performance and was actually quite shocked to find it there.

I dive with the Atomic B1/T2 in water that averages about 45-55. Never had a problem with it needing to be sealed. I've used it in water that was 36 degrees on 2 dives, no problems.

If there was a lot of debris in the first stage of an unsealed
piston first then more care needs to be taken rinsing the
first stage.

"Sealing" is necessary mostly for dirty water and because it
is not permanent (to my knowledge) you'll need to make certain
that it is not being bypassed and trapping water and stuff.

For what it's worth I use UNsealed Atomics year round in water temps low 30s and air temps down to the teens and the only difficulty I've ever had was during an ice dive. On the other hand I had some problems with a SEALED reg during an ice dive. I've had NO problems during an ice dive with an UNsealed reg. So, you decide.
