Jaeger, what the dive shop is telling you is not correct. They can BOTH switch back and forth between air and 50%. The mondel in the M1 allows for UP to 80%. But once you put anything less then 50% through the reg, then you lose that higher percentage (unless you get it serviced again).
Seriously, unless you are going to hang this reg off your deco bottle, it shouldn't even be a consideration (nitrox limits).
