We were diving Ft Wetherill last year when I spotted a crab that looked like a big spider. I picked it up from the backside, not expecting any trouble when I discovered that this things arms were long enough to reach behind and grab a finger.

I thought it was going to take the finger off, it really was hurting. I put the thing back on the bottom which normally causes them to let go. Not this s.o.b., he was really grinding away and trying to get a grip with the other claw.

When he finally decided he'd won the battle and let go he just sat there waving his arms as if saying "come on back, that was fun"

Lesson learned...look before touching!!

Oh i've heard about the Ft. W crabs, they are famous for being mean little buggers. By the way squeeze the claws and they will let go it is a defense mechanism since that is how they fight. If you squeeze them they will open by instinct since they figure you got them with a more dangerous claw than the one they have you with. They are too dumb to realize neoprene is soft and we would need a nut cracker to do any damage.

Dove there once with my brother. I added my initials to the side of the bus. He on the other hand, carved what seemed to be the Declaration of Independence. While he was doing all this work I watched a good size fish swim right up to his head and bite him hard enough to draw blood. He almost stabbed himself in the head trying to fend the fish off. I almost drowned myself laughing.
I guess the bass was protecting the "Attractions" at Dutch....
