My wife and I are diving in Cozumel over New Year's. She finally went to see her ortopedist about a medial meniscus tear of her knee. He want to do arthroscopic surgery on December 10, two weeks prior to our departure. What do you think?

It took me quite a while to get back into the water after my knee surgery. Lots of rehab and healing.

However, if she is feeling good about it, and the Dr. agrees I don't see why it couldn't be done.

I'd be careful with the extra weight of the gear though. No sense reinjuring things.

I've had 5 knee surgeries, 3 since I started diving. I had a meniscus repair at 10am on a Friday, and dove a Saturday morning boat. But I'm not that bright. Different surgeries (of similar type) have completely different recovery times. I would highly suggest having the surgey after the vacation.

There is -no way- to tell how long the recovery will be (I hope it's two days), and the doctor, who probably doesn't dive, will be extra conservative in any recovery estimate.

One took 6 days to rehab, the other took 6 weeks...it's a crapshoot.

Meniscus tears can be painful without doubt :D
As a neuromuscular therapist- if someone came to me who had had the surgery and asked if they could dive- i'd probably advise against it. But two weeks later isn't too bad provided she rested it as much as she could before hand.
Realistically, with a proper fin technique, her knee shouldn't be used all that much either!
It's also possible she could get it strapped up and taped to reduce any painful movement of the knee, making any diving that she does as comfortable as possible.

I had my partial menisecetomy on a Friday... on Monday I was working on cars again. I don't think I slowed much on Saturday and Sunday either. :D

Auto technicians usually have a high tolerance for pain. Glad I don't do that any more! :D

Better check with the Doc...but when I had mine done I would've had no problem being back in the water in two days. Some people have more swelling and pain than others...like someone else said....its a crapshoot!!
