So I am looking into a week on Bonaire.

I am probably looking more to rent a condo or villa with another couple.

So what we would need is a place to get our fills and a truck or two. We haven't decided if we want to commit to one truck for the 4 of us or just make it more flexible by having two trucks.

Looking at it from a pure financial angle...

Is it better to get the two (truck and nitrox) as a package deal or do them individually?

Do some places offer better deals than others?

What about the quality of the trucks? Are some newer and some older and more beat up?

Having never been there, I really have no idea what to expect.

Any input as to what you recommend or what you might do "next" time is appreciated.

What have others done?

I've always rented my truck from AB Carrental. They give you the option of renting a newer (<18 months old) truck or an older (> 18 months) truck. I've always chosen the newer truck as the price difference was not that much and I hoped to not have to deal with potential dead batteries, etc like i've heard about.

I've also always rented tanks/air from Buddies since I rented villas up that way. I'm not sure if the truck rental agencies give package deals with air. I know buddies offers trucks but only if you are staying there on-site.

Most of the condos - at least along the waterfront - have dive operators on-site/nearby they're associated with. Just about every villa/house I've looked at does also. Most will even have rinse/storage facilities in a secure area outside. A few get tank rental deliveries also. So ask anyone you may rent from.

We like BelMar condos south of town. They're nice, a little upscale, have a pool and it's a smaller property. One advantage they have also is Buddy Dive's other shop is on-site there. That allows you to also use the drive-thru tank exchange facility north of town at Buddy Dive. The big disadvantage is that any food is a drive north past the lagoon - to at least the Plaza Resort or 5mins. farther to town.

Another option in that area is Port Bonaire - they have one of the Dive Friends shops on-site. Port Bonaire is in the flight path so that's an occasional annoyance. DF is good if you'd like to hit the water on arrival since they offer the Bonaire Marine Park orientation anytime - many of the other shops typically schedule it for the next morning. Also DF has the most shops on the island of anyone (5?) both north and south of town so that's convenient for tank exchanges. I'd pick them if your property doesn't have a deal with someone.

Moving slightly farther north - the Plaza Resort - the only real AI there - has "villas" - Toucan Dive is their on-site operator. Big place though so a bit of a haul between the villas, the dive shop/lockers/dock south and 18Palms - their house dive on the north end.

Now skipping north of town - there are some rental options in town but there's little/no shore diving there. Many tend to be across the street from the water also.

Den Laman Condos has Bonaire Dive & Adventure on-site. Sand Dollar Condos next to it has one of the other Dive Friends shops. Both are on Bari Reef.

Buddy Dive also rents condos. So does Habitat next door. Habitat has two dives, La Machaca and the start of the Cliff dive site to the north.

Just north of there is an area you might be interested in also. There's several sets of 3-4 bedroom "villas" - detached on the Cliff dive site. Ones on the southern end of the property have a deal with Habitat since they're so close. Here's one of them - there's also some 3BR's.Santa Barbara Vacation Rental - VRBO 3716046ha - 4 BR Bonaire Villa, Oceanfront Villa Ocean Blue, Walking Distance of Dive Shops, Restaurants - there's a row of about 10-15 of them waterfront. I've noticed at least 4-5 are rentals. The dock/boats seen in one of the pictures are Habitat's - it's pretty close.

1/2 block further north is Hamlet Oasis - not waterfront but around the pool. Smaller units though IIRC. There's yet another Dive Friends location at the north end of the property but DF does not have a boat there.

Much past that and you get into more villas/houses in the Santa Barbara/Sabadeco area. I would assume (but do not know) that you'd have to drive down to "resort row" for tanks from those properties. With the exception of Caribbean Club - a condo/villa property across the street and up the hill from the water. They have the 3rd Buddy Dive affiliated shop on-site. That's going to be a short drive back to town from there for anything.

Much past that things sort of taper off into dive sites - leading eventually to the refinery and the farthest north sites - Karpata then Nukove past the refinery.

If you're looking for a house instead there's a few in the Belnem area that are waterfront - and farther south in Punt Vierkant. Some like the Piet Boon residences are very contemporary and upscale. Search for Kas Dorrie on vrbo.com - it's one. Priced accordingly. Sunbelt Realty also rents just about all the houses on Bonaire that are rentals also. You'll find after looking for a while that the same properties are on Sunbelt, vrbo.com or airbnb.com - or offered on the owner's private website - there's a fixed inventory they all share. Some very nice oceanfront villas up in Sabadeco to the north also.

We get our trucks at the airport from one of the chains - Avis IIRC. They're not too beat up - except the seats are salt stained - but I've seen some that are pretty tired - with tank racks in the back the springs take a beating. You should do a nick/dent inventory and have the agent verify it both ways.

Some of the properties - like Buddy Dive - have their own fleet so they shuttle you back and forth. I'd personally find that less convenient.

hth,

I have not been there yet but I chose AB Car rental based on advice from some of these Bonaire regulars. Looks like a good decision - they are helpful and flexible....and reply promptly to e-mails.
Bas Noij of VIP divers suggested Blachi Koko Apartments. Once again, they are very helpful and flexible.

I just checked the AB Carrental website. Is that the standard vs deluxe model?

Keith. If you go with a private condo, your choices are wide open.

For the truck. There may be some rental companies that will give you a discount for a two truck rental but likely you will just pay for each at the going rental rate, usually between 300 and 400 depending on the company and your insurance choice. We have used...

AB Carrental. Located off airport. They picked up the divers at the airport and transport them to their office where you then wait in line while the paperwork is completed. Our experience was about an hour total time from when we left the airport. They required a rather large deposit as I recall but not sure. Drop off is at the office and they transport you to the airport. Overall an ok experience.

Easy One Rent. Arranged through the condo owners. Ok experience. They meet you at the airport and usually have the truck there and you fill out the paperwork then and drop them off on your way to your condo. They are usually on Bonaire time. They typically have you pick them up on the way to the airport for drop off.

Lastly, the most recent was Telerin. More expensive but by far the most convinient. Paperwork info given prior to arrival so all you have to do on arrival is confirm info and get your truck. All done at the airport. Drop off is even easier. Just park and leave at airport! Loved it. We arrived, got our car, checked into condo, completed paperwork at dive op and was in the water in a record time. It's the rental we are using our trip this spring.

All the trucks have been pretty much trashed but functional. Never had to call for repairs or assistance so far. Given the road conditions on Bonaire, we actually prefer a truck that is less than mint.

As for condos, I think diversteve pretty well nailed it. I will clarify that Hamlet Oasis is a small resort not ocean front and that Hamlet Villas is in front of the Oasis and most definitely is ocean front with some excellent private villa options on vrbo. After a little research and you've narrowed down your preferences, just come back with specific question. We all love to give our opinions!

Dive op will be driven by condo location and preferences. Again, check back with any specific questions.

++ on Telerin. The pickup/drop off arrangement is great. And poppy has never given us any trash about damage.

That's because all the trucks are beaters.

But, in this case, beaters is good.

i got a brand new, never-been-rented truck from Everts one year. I hated it - spent the whole trip worrying about putting a scratch on that damn truck.

our very first trip we rented from AB. They wanted me to pay $100 for a rusty dent. I finally beat them down, but it left a really bad taste at the end. Haven't rented from them since, and it has been a looonnngg time.

Telerin - trucks are worn, but have never let us down. I'll keep renting from them until it gets to be a problem.

Ditto what uncfnp and gbf said about Telerin. We just returned from 3 weeks using a Telerin truck. After a while they're like old friends (or your own vehicles) where you recognize license plates and other "unique" features. We were disappointed to find that between our June and December trips our favorite little white truck had suffered a tear in the driver's seat upholstery (due to lazy divers driving around in saltwater-soaked wetsuits, which causes the fabric to break down prematurely) and dents on the cab roof (from dumb divers standing on it for even dumber reasons.)

Still it was operable and dependable, and the battery and tires were in great shape. Here's a GoPro capture taken at Andrea I a couple of weeks ago.

It's also worth noting that Chinese trucks have been trickling into Bonaire over the past several years. Hindsight shows that they're not using the same metal alloys as the Japanese brands. The newer Chinese brands are rusting out much faster than their older Japanese counterparts. I'll take an older Telerin Toyota Hilux any day.

+1 for Telerin, rented twice with them. Love the convenient pickup/drop off and the beater!
