It depends on the distance, I find it easier to rent at my destination as long as the gear is of the same quality and price.

It really comes down to timing, availability and all those little details.

If you know that the destination will have what you need, in your size and in good condition then you have less to haul and you will pay for a shorter rental period by renting there.

On the other hand if the destination is questionable then leaving home with known gear from your LDS is good insurance for your trip.

Like others have said - it depends on what's convenient. I only need tanks, which I usually rent at the destination. When I was using other rental gear, I would get it from the LDS that way I knew what I was getting.

If you are participating in a LDS sponsored trip, I suggest renting from them.

The main thing to to understand that gear is Life Support equipment...obtain it from people you trust.

Buy your own gear ASAP; become expert with it.

If the trip is for a class, or a sponsored trip, rent from the local shop, they may even transport the equiptment, and/or offer you a ride. If you are just going for a dive with a buddy of your choice, rent at the site. I agree find out what gear is being rented, and how often it is rotated out of stock,( a good time to but some equiptment). I was at a shop in the Philippines a few years ago, and the equiptment looked more than ten years old.
The goal is to dive safely!

Especially since you're driving to your dive location, I would suggest renting from your local dive shop. You know what you're getting and they'll have everything in your size. You may get to the dive location and realize their equipt. isn't in the best shape, or they don't have the exact size you need, etc.

In my opinion, much better to pay an extra days worth of rental to have good equipt. that fits to your body properly. Have fun and dive safe.

Spectrum up above gave good advice, let me add a thought. . . on different dives rent from both. Wetsuits, BC's, and to a limited extent fins and other gear depend on fit for your comfort. No two manufacturers use the same size patterns. One brand will always fit you better than another. As to "life support" don't believe it. . . these are all just toys to make a dive more fun. With experience you will learn you can take it all off underwater and swim to shore without it. If these top dollar regulators, computers, wings etc. are really life support, Cousteau and all of us early divers that showed the way would have died underwater and no one would dive today.
