Sea fans are Cnidarians, all of which have stinging cells. They are animals that feed by filtering and stinging prey. I've never been stung by one, but I hear it's pretty mild...more rashlike than anything else.

Of course, I've seen sea fans encrusted by fire coral...which will definitely sting you.
 
Hydroids will light you up with an itchy rash for a week. See attached picture

Yeah I definately got hit by something the other night


Good to know!

It was a little worse than a mild itching, more like moderate burning.
