I haven't been to Cozumel in about 10 years, and from what I see it's mainly foreign dive opperators and shops, are there any good dive opperators that speak spanish at all? All the dive master seems to be foreing also, so I don't know if they speak Spanish fluently?

I can understand english perfectly and I speak it well anough, but I would like to speak Sapnish in my country when it's possible.

thanks in advanced

Acabo de volver de Cozumel y me parecía que todos los divemaster e instructores eran mexicanos. No sé cómo era hace diez años.

After sending my initial response (which, as you may have surmised indicated astonishment at your question), I thought "Marg, you might have been a bit more helpful." Many of these ops are on line and you (obviously) are also on-line. Why don't you send an e-mail to them in Spanish and see whether they respond en Espanol? That ought to answer your question easily enough.

That's why I asked, I did a search on diving shops on Cozumel and all the owners and most of the dive masters seemed to be foreing, yeah, they might reply to me in Spanish, but I want to know if with the people I'm actually diving will speak spanish.

I go every year to the Riviera Maya or Costa Maya, and I have a hard time speaking spanish there on the Hotels or places I go to. Specially the smalls ones.

I don't think you'll have a problem. ScubaBoard is an English speaking community for various reasons, but you'll find that the Captains, DMs, and most of the Ops speak Spanish as their primary language with most also fluent in English. I know some people there who could give you off-the-record info on certain actions to ensure it'll stay that way, too. :)

Some of the ops have U.S. e-mail addresses for us folks non-fluent en espanole to talk to. However, I can't think of any op I've dived with where the large majority of the DMs aren't native Mexicans and the owners - if not native Mexicans - have been there long enough that they are fairly fluent also. I would expect that if they respond to you in Spanish, they can actually speak Spanish also. The managers for these ops need to speak Spanish to their suppliers, if nothing else. And if you are staying at any of the smaller Mom and Pop hotels in Coz, it's sometimes a challenge finding folks who speak English!

I'm sure that others can chime in here, but I know that all principal parties at Blue Angel speaks Spanish. At Living Underwater, Jeremy (who is married to a Mexican woman and whose child speaks Mexican) speaks fluent Spanish. At Liquid Blue, Roberto is Mexican, as is his brother. At Pelagic Ventures, Troy, who has lived in Coz for about a 1/2 dozen years, speaks Spanish. I'm sure Christi at Blue X-T-Sea speaks Spanish but if she doesn't, her staff does. Dive Paradise has scads of Mexican DMs and shop managers. Black Shark - same thing. etc. etc. You will have no problemo finding shops that will speak to you in your native tongue.

Now you've picqued my curiosity. Could you explain this a bit further?
