does anyone know if the bolt sizes are the same for the two? im assuming the bolt holes are the standard 11" apart but are the bolt holes in the backplate and sta the same diameter?

The bolt holes in the STA are square to accommodate the head of a carriage bolt. The holes in the plate are standard. The STA fits fine.

And if one is too small, you can always drill it out bigger. You shouldn't need a massive bolt, though. The shear on it will be significantly less than 100# even with heavy doubles, and the axial load would not be a whole lot either. Just about any steel bolt made would handle that.

I'm using an Oxycheq STA with a DR plate and Home Depot carriage bolts. Works fine.
The square holes on the Oxy STA keep the bolts from spinning when the wing nut is tightened.

My new Oxycheq weighted STA has the bolts embedded in the channel with the lead weight. Works awesome Gotta love the Oxy steel cam locks as well

since the sta makes the top cam band slot higher up on the plate does bring the first stage up to the point were it restricts you from tilting your head back? i heard this is common problem with STAs. have youve exprienced any of this? oh and one more thing, in all the pics of the oxycheq sta it looks as if its painted white. is this so?

You'll probably hit your head unless you drill new holes in the DR BP since it only has one set. If you're not hitting your head, you may not be able to reach your valve. The STA is bare SS.

Having a DR SS backplate myself, why do you want a STA? Personally I dont find it necessary....but whatever floats your boat.

alignment issues, has anyone tried oxycheq's soft sta?

Alignment issues? What kind, if I may ask?

I dive singles with a pony mounted on the cam straps and am not aware of any alignment problems.

Could it possible be misadjusted shoulder straps?
