Hi,
I'm curious as to peoples opinion on hose protectors. Are they a good thing that should be used, or just another one of those accessories that are sold to make things look good, but really don't have a functional purpose.

Thanks,

Darryl

I don't use them. I f I have a small leak It may be harder to detect with stuff is the way. Hoses that are routed well won't have as much stress on them.

All mine came straight off once I knew what I was doing, they just get in the way. As stated above, if you route properly you don't need em, also not having them enabled me to route properly.

I don't have a hose cover.

I do have a hose conected to by octo/2nd that is yellow.
You still get the easily seen yellow without the bulk.

Take a peak at my site picture if you want to see it. --Starfish

Are you truely talking about hose protectors that cover the entire length of the hose, or the short, stubby protectors that cover the hose/fitting swage?

Roak

I can see why you'd want the short stubbies (what I would refer to as a protector), but not the entire hose wraps.

Me?......Oh I was referring to the Stubbies. The idea of a cover over the hoses sound awful, is that a US thing, cause I don't think I ever seen nuffink like it here in the UK. Unless you are reffering to the brightly colored wraps that some of my female diving friends use to "Make it look a bit pretty!"

I use the "stubbies". I've had two friends who have had a hose break at the first stage. I believe to mishandling by the charter operator - but who knows? - but everyone else who had "stubbies" didn't experience any problems.

Entire hose wrap? I don't recommend the mesh wrap for the reasons state above. I have a yellow wrap non-mesh type (so I can still exam the hose with ease) on my octo hose -- makes it real visible for by buddy to know where the spare air is.

ALmost every hose failure occurs right at the crimp. The hose is sometimes being asked to do a 90 degree or better sharp radius turn. The "stubbies" add more support to the hose in that area. It also provides some cushion for any impact to that area. As for bubbles, when they start a comin out, it is NO PROBLEM seeing the affected area. Just snatch that bad boy up the hose a bit and look. Of course, you should be inspectiong your hoses just about every dive anyway, and at the very least, once a month. But like the tires on your car, most people neglect them.

And like my tyres until I had one 'blow' that was my attitude, When my tyre went I was lucky and walked away, when the HP hose on my rig 'popped' I was very nearly an unlucky chap, therefore my hoses now get as much respect and attention as my wheels!!!!!!
