I own a pair of Smoke on the Water fins. Great power fins except they are a couple of inches too long, making them a pita to pack and harder to walk with on a boat.

So I'm thinking it's time to try something else. Are the AA open heeled split fins any shorter? My LDS doesn't stock them, and I can't find the dimensions on the AA website.

I love the spring straps and really don't want to switch back to buckles.

Maybe I should just whip out my hack saw...

Do you recommend the Smoke on the Water fins? I was thinking of returning the Oceanic Vipers I just got for the Atomics. I had a recent ACL reconstruction, and I am thinking the splits might be better for me.......or I am just using that as an excuse to justify the purchase of another Atomic product. I am concerned about the not being able to get out of a current thing.

I've found the fins to be great in the water but for travel not so much. These fins are on the long side and somewhat heavy. They just barely fit in my suit case and take up a lot of room in my mesh bag. And because of their length, they're more difficult to walk in on a boat than would be shorter, lighter fins.

On the plus side, the spring straps make it very easy to put them on and take off. They're very comfortable in the water, so much so that for the first few dives after I got them, years ago, I would sometimes turn around to see if they were still attached because I was used to more pressure with my buckle straps. I had my ACL reconstruction done about 15 years ago, and there's no question that splits have been easier on my knee. And they're very powerful, probably due at least in part to their length and weight.

I'm a huge Atomics fan, but this may be the one piece of gear for which I have to go somewhere else.
