I just got back from Saba and used 9 lbs with the same equipment!
In an earlier post you said you had to fin downward with 20# in the aquarium. That means the difference between Saba oceanwater and the aquarium is bigger than the difference between fresh and saltwater!

If it really is water density and not currents, you should be able to detect this big of difference in density (about 3%) even by rather crude instruments, such as weighing a liter water bottle on a postage scale.
 
That is what is driving me so crazy! Nothing about this makes sense!
