Spoon:
ive seen some bangkeros navigate to it by land reference alone, anyway i guess its set, mapating it is:)

The fixes are simple - but GPS is fail safe

uhmmm... where did you buy yours? (iris hoping you bought it locally...)
gps can be found locally... hans manila i think has... as well as some gadget shops... sorry can't remember any off the top of my head but i could have sworn i've seen some around

I love my GPS. Just wish Geocaching was catching on here. I still need to place a scuba cache...

Yes, but it never fails to amaze me how fishermen, functionally illiterate at that, can use dead reckoning to an uncanny degree of accuracy.

I remember how, in 2001, a bangkero got us exactly on top a 50 meter deep wreck with only TWO (2) points of land references to go by. And those land references were at least 25 to 30 KILOMETERS AWAY...

If you want to find a new wreck just ask a fisherman - I know when my mates were looking for princess of the orient (with a relatively small search area) they found a fisherman who could put them right on it (saving the hassle of doing search grids). Is nice to use technology to check (depth sounder) that you're not doing a dive on HMS sandy bottom though :D
