I've been diving for about a year (16 dives so far) and am now ready to buy my own gear (I currently only have a snorkel, mask, fins, boots and a weight belt).

The first thing I'd like to get is a Reg system. My instructor recommended Apex or ScubaPro Regs.

Which of those two would you guys recommend?

for "Apeks" and or "ScubaPro" and you will find literally hundreds of posts on this subject.

Not that nobody will answer you, but like I said there is a ton of info out there.

I agree with King Kong - this debate is a big one on this board.

My dive buddy and I both dive Apex ATX200 and they are just fantastic!!! Between us we have:
2 x Apex 200
1 x Apex TX 100
2 x Apex TX 50
1 x Dacor Viper TEC
1 x Aqua lung Titan

I was a Dacor Viper TEC fan - even though it was a very wet breather (tried to drown you if U turned upside down if U 4 got to purge it first) and had a tendency to free flow on hitting the water, and that it was heavy on the jaw (problem solved with the Aqua lung Comfo-bite mouthpiece) - otherwise a really great reg ha ha. But the Apex just leaves it for dust in every way

But on the other hand I know several Scuba pro dives and they just love them to bits as well

My advice is read the posts here and try to dive both types several times under various conditions and then decide on which one is best 4 U

I like ScubaPro regs the best. Very reliable, easy to service, and outstanding performance. No problems with any of my ScubaPro regs...ever.

Your instructor, clearly. He has good taste. ;)

Picking between the two is like definitively determining if red or white wine is better.

Both are great regs.
Look for who services them. If that is not an issue, then pick based on looks and tastes.

First: Both SP and Apeks are terrific lines. Not many have any regrets about buying any of their regulators. Relax and enjoy.

Second: The shop and the technician should probably be as much a factor in your decision as which regulator, at least if you're choosing between SP and Apeks.

Third: It doesn't always work that the most expensive model is the best. Indeed, I think many will tell you that the middle of the line will give you most (if not all) of the performance at a much lower price. I certainly think so.

Some random droolings: I prefer SP, but not so much that the price differential hasn't had me buying Apeks my last couple of times in the market. I don't think much of the SP warranty deal: expensive service to maintain a warranty that will rarely be used, lotsa paperwork, etc. The TX100 first stage has a retarded 1/2" port that was put there just to be aggravating. Steer clear of the SP Titanium firsts - they shouldn't be used with enriched air. Steer clear of the SP Aluminum firsts - the material is just too soft. Gotta love being able to tear open and clear the Apek regs underwater with no tools. My SP regs seem to breath a tiny bit better, definitely drier in strange positions. If you're traveling, you'll probably find it easier to get an SP reg serviced than Apeks in some foreign locale.

Hope this helps...

If I can recommend a regulator setup, it would be a Scubapro MK20 or MK25 1st Stage (they are pretty much the same. The MK 25 can have the intermediate pressure adjusted externally without a conversion kit.) and a G250HP 2nd Stage. I have the MK/20-G250Hp setup and it has been an excellent regulator for me. I do quite a bit of deep diving (over 100FT), drift diving, and “cool water” diving and I have never had a problem as far as reliability or in an over breathing situation. I would describe this regulator setup in a few words as: WORKHORSE, RELIABLE, EASY TO SERVICE, GREAT BREATHER, ROBUST (you know it’s in your mouth, it’s not a tiny regulator. Some people prefer a regulator that has something to grab onto.)

You will see quite a few people on this board recommend Scubapro and Apeks. Both of these companies provide some of the best scuba regulators in the business. From my own personal experience with Scubapro, I can tell you that I have nothing but praise for their products, especially the MK/20-G250HP regulator setup.

If you can, try to rent or borrow a friend’s regulator and give them a try in an actual diving situation.
