I have an Apeks Egress octo that does not seem to be seating fully when it is not being inhaled on. It is releasing a small amount of air all the time, bubbles coming out of the mouth piece.

I have not been able to find a service manual to find out how to get the reg open to see if I can see or find a problem.

Does any one have a suggestion or help?

Thanks

Tried there, no luck.

I'm not planning on servicing really, just want to look inside and see how it works and if i can see any thing obviously wrong or where it leaking.

Thanks

Hello Claymore,

Anytime you get a freeflow from the second stage, you must first confirm that the first stage is delivering the correct intermediate pressure.

Then, go back to the Frog kick site and down load some of the Apex manuals. Even though your particular regulator may not be covered there, there will be plenty of other manuals available that you can read through that will give you a good idea of what goes on in your regulator. The Apex "Second Stage Repair Manual" can be highly recommended.

Chances are, you either need a second stage soft seat or it may just need a small adjustment.

good luck,

It is definitely in the second stage. I have tried it on more than one 1st and they all have IP's in the proper range.

I'll check the second stage manuals again.

My main issue is the proper way to get to the guts of the reg, I'm not sure how or where to get the cover off.

Look at the purge button. There's a plastic ring (around the edge) that screws into the body & holds the button in. Put your palm down on the button, grasp the edges (of the ring), rotate counter clockwise.

PS. If you have no luck finding a manual for an Egress, have a look at the Aqualung LPO 2nd stage manual. They're quite alike.

Claymore,

If you have ruled out the I.P. that is a good start. But I may as well tell you up front that removing the cover from the first stage will probably only allow you to see a few internal items and will not expose the discrepant part which is most likely the soft seat.

I just had a gander at the manual that Kern suggested and it is a good one. Download it and read carefully through the entire thing. An adjustment of the crown (orifice) and lever height may be in order. If that doesn't solve the problem, then probably the soft seat will have to be replaced. Note: Some soft seats are identical on both sides, i.e. it can be flipped over for a fresh surface.

Warning.....if you follow my above instructions, you will die! So do not do it. Remember this is life support and should be done by a qualified tech. If you kill yourself, don't say I did not tell you NOT to do it, the info above is for reference only.

I did figure out how it comes apart, pressure and a rubber jar opener, and got it open.
I put it on a first, mounted it on a tank and put it underwater to find the leak. It is leaking from the exhaust port and one other small hole in the valve.
I can see no way to make an external adjustment to the lever. There are no external nuts and the valve appears to be closed end.

Looks like its shop time.

Thanks for the help

It's probably shop time
