The rule a lot of people in the PNW go by is 10% of your weight +10lbs. This is typically a little heavy. I'm 6'1" 200lbs so rule would put me at 30lbs. Right now I dive with 26lbs, includes 2x2lb ankle weights.

I agree with your calcuations
I weigh 165lbs ,yet when I put sweat pants and sweat top over t-shirt , dry suit underware . then vent suit with 28lbs could not get down had to pull on ascent then could not stay down .
when added extra weight no problem to get down and stay down
hope it changes soon

I did this too. Sweats have a lot a loft. They require more lead than you would think to sink them. I made the same mistake and mysteriously found myself quite underweighted with an additional four pounds already on me from when I did my dives for my drysuit cert in AOW. If you do anything, get thicker undies and lighter clothes on under the undersuit (like a real thin running suit). You will be suprised at how much weight you won't be using and you won't be that much colder.

Just my 2 psi.

Yes, it takes alot of weight to sink alot of underclothes. That's why we spend alot of money to get undergarments that are warm but light, such as thinsulate or polartec. If you go on to buy a drysuit, don't skimp on the undergarments--especially for the colder waters you are diving. I dive the same temps in the midwest--on deep dives in the summer, and on all dives in the winter.

Glad you enjoyed your AOW class!! Happy diving to you,

a side note
this evening I did my second dive for enriched air ,the lake was not as cold as I thought and I ending up sweating
I do like the dry suit I bought ,just have to work out the undergarments . it takes a litle used to achieve realy good bouyancy control with a dry suit
