May I suggest you two things?

1 - do not think about the tec pass and not even a rec pass; it is ok to get a pass rating, but you'll most likely become obsessed and stressed if you start thinking about it. Just dive, have fun, and practice skills frequently; indeed, practising skills is something you'll never stop doing (or, at least, you shouldn't)... I end almost every dive with some exercises, just for fun
2 - if you are so much a beginner and you like GUE, why not take a rec1 course and then a rec2? Although more expensive, if your only certification is the OW, you will learn so many things in terms of skills, navigation and rescue that the content/price ratio will be advantageous for you.

So, for you getting a pass may actually be easy, so I wish you good luck. Jest keep in mind that even if you get a tec pass, you will not be able to use it right now (you need 100 dives under your belt to start tech and cave courses with GUE).

I wrote something in the past about the obsession of getting a pass, it's a very common "illness", feel free to look at my past posts if you want to know a bit more about my experience.

Whatever you will want to focus on, good luck!

I get that the cost of rec1 is high, but consider that you do three courses in one (ow, advanced and nitrox). Furthermore, you will cover everything about fundamental if you do rec1 and rec2. Since you need a lot of experience before enrolling tec courses you may well think of tec1 this year and rec2 next one. And you will save the money of fundies part two.

Anyway, it's your choice, just be sure that you have a clear overview of the options and discuss them with your instructor.

when the diver is at a fundies level of proficiency where the course will be beneficial to everyone

Yes, you're absolutely right, and that's why not only I failed miserably on my fundies, but I didn't even make it to part 2...

Greetings everyone,
my name is Aristotelis.
Around 10 years ago I got my Open Water cert, but didn't do any dives after my cert, for lots and different reasons.

About a year ago I decided to go back into diving, and decided that the GUE Fundamentals may be a good choice for a refresher course.
Actually, nothing can be further from the truth...

I attempted my Fundies, but couldn't finish it successfully due to my experience level being low.
So now I'm planning to dive a little and I'm aiming for a Tech pass in the summer.

I would like to do a bit of underwater photography, and maybe experience a live aboard in the Red sea.
Rebreather I find interesting, and using a DPV looks like fun, so this is also something I'd like to try.

My life is split between Munich, Germany and Greece, mostly Athens and Thessaloniki.

Now that is the good trim, the masterful lounge chair position.

I think you're right about fundies, it's like an evaluation on where your skillset is, in preparation for tech training. Wherever you are you'll learn a lot, and gain experience especially from video analysis with your instructor. But maintaining 0-15 or 0-30 deg trim & buoyancy within 3 or 5 ft in a fixed hover position with no hand sculling while task loading new drills isn't easy for new divers.

Practicing back kicks & in-water drills from gue.tv before attending will help.

The fundies is the most misunderstood course ever...

The main purpose of the fundies is to explain you how to practice autonomously (i.e. no instructors with you) with your buddies without learning bad habits. Nothing more, nothing less.

Everything else (pass rating) is just a plus and should not be seen as the main goal of the course. Indeed, you can get the pass rating even with other courses.

Wherever you are you'll learn a lot, and gain experience especially from video recording analysis with your instructor.

Fundies take on what fundies is:

It functions as a gateway into GUE training and it is an excellent way to personally experience what GUE is all about.

Some divers use the Fundamentals course as a way to improve on the less-than-optimal training they have received during traditional fast-track entry-level courses. Others see the course as a ticket to participate in GUE projects and activities. Many technical divers and even experienced instructors from other organizations use the course to improve basic skills and gain access to GUE’s cave and tech-training.

Hi @sourdough , I am perfectly aware of that. There are historical reasons why people take the fundies as a gateway. But (1) that is true only for divers already certified with different agencies and (2) it is NOT the way the course is designed.

You may like it or not, but the course is NOT designed as an evaluation nor as a gateway. It is designed to find your weaknesses in terms of skills, and to explain you how to practice later on to improve these skills without an instructor. That simple.
