Looks like you had some fun. I have never been beneath ice but have logged several dives in 36-38 degree water. I would like to try it one day if I get the chance.

I too enjoy ice diving. There are a couple videos on my web site of us under the ice. We do it cave style.

Ice diving is great, it's the hole cutting and logistics that are no fun. I am also not a real fan of the traditional harness and tether approach.

My ideal ice dive is when you can find open water on a point and then penetrate back under the ice in a bay using a reel in the same way you'd conduct a wreck or cave dive. You get the benefit of being under the ice without the hole cutting issues.

I prefer that approach as well when diving through a hole - doing a primary tie off on a shot line and anchor dropped through the hole.

I'll be doing an ice dive this weekend, and as the (slightly) more experienced ice diver in the group, I get to be the guinea pig for the reel method. We have a small local quarry with a couple of sunken picnic tables in it. We can swim out and drop dead on top of the picnic tables in the summer, so we're going to cut the hole over top of one of them this weekend, tie a main line to the picnic table, then I'm going to run my reel off the table. Should be an interesting experiment.

Yeah, we'll be running a heavy line from the hole to the picnic table, then I'm going to tie off of it.

usaly what i do even if there is a heavy line i run a line from a ice bolt or other tie off on the surface then do a secondary tie off on the bottom under the hole the run line out to wear you have to be .

We had a great dive on the weekend of Feb 9th.

We're going again next weekend to Cook's Bay, Lake Simcoe for more fun under the ice!
