I've heard some negative tales about snorkeling tours down in Cancun where they take you out to see dead coral, ect. Does anyone have any good experiences with a tour down there?

I have never done a tour but have you considered renting a car (about $35) and driving to Akumal (45 min)? 307 is a good, modern, hiway and now that the bypass thru Playa is in its actually a pretty low stress drive (Mexico has no open container law)
You can see the turtles and other than a few bucks for equipment rental at ADS its free. A mile up the road on the north end of half moon bay is Yal Ku lagoon which is a lot of fun and there are lots of fish (about $8 entrance fee). A couple miles south, just past Chemuyil is Xcacel Beach, about $10 a car (or what the market will bear), it is primative and undeveloped, great snokeling and there is a free cenote on the south end (short walk thru the jungle, take biodegradable bug spray)
15 more miles south is Tulum and Camilo Jr's fish market and resturant, 18 months ago 65 MNP for a plate of fresh cerviche, two people couldn't finish.
Skip the tours, discover Mexico.
