Maldives is in the Indian, not Pacific, Ocean.
We went to Lohifushi in 2000. Reasonable price and a nice place. I saw some pictures of their tsunami damage from a year ago; probably that's all cleaned up by now.
In the Maldives your contact with locals is very limited. The resorts are all on "uninhabited" islands and are very self-contained. The islands are beautiful, and the diving is great.
At Lohi's, there are good beaches, diving, pool, surfing, and places for hanging out. There's a watersports guy who rents (and teaches) windsurfers and a Hobie catamaran. When we were there the max capacity was about 200 guests, but there were only about 100 there. Staff was about 300. So they can take good care of everything. It was a great place to spend 2 weeks and get into a nice comfortable routine: breakfast, morning diving or activity, lunch, afternoon diving or activity, hang-out time, dinner, relax in the evening.
The food was nothing to write home about, and breakfast especially got pretty boring. But it was plentiful and adequate.
Dive shop was well run and casual. Instructors and DMs were excellent (we got OWD and AOWD certifications there). All diving is from boats. Lots of variety. The house reef at Lohi's is really great, so we did tons of snorkling too.
