I'll be in Austin this weekend and was wanting to check out the pecan grove in lake travis. Just seeing if anyone else was interested?

There is no "pecan grove", there are just a few trees down there

Lake is way down, so you should be able to see some tree's pretty shallow, post up conditions/depth if you head down there please, curious to know what the temps/vis is like on the bottom.

Sunday the 20th - viz at 80' was a good 15+ - actually quite a surprise, and 6-8' on the traverse line (123' depth) with 55 degree temps.

The traverse line has been cut seems like. Some of the poles holding it in place were down. We followed it until the end of the line and wrote "The End" in the silt.

That sucks, how far out was it cut, and what do you mean by the poles were down, as in pushed into the ground? I know those things are TOUGH to move, was it pull over to the side?

If so, that could be an indication of someone getting hung up in that, and pulling the poll over trying to get out, if thats the case, they had to pull like a bear because I've "tested" some of those and they were solid as a rock.

They were pulled over on their sides. There were only a couple of them down, and both were laying like they were pulled to the north. It didn't look like, based on the bottom under the line appearing pretty much undisturbed, that anyone was struggling to get untangled, but that's just my perception of it.

I didn't really pay too much attention on how far out we went as far as distance. I can only tell you that we went out for 7min once we hit the line then turned back. We all were in doubles and had two deco bottles each, so we weren't setting any speed records. That's probably not too helpful...

No that was helpful, I wonder what the hell happened.

Well, I've got a reel up on the other bank so at a minimum I gotta get back down there and connect it up to go get my reel.

That's some seriously deep dragging if something from a boat snagged it?

The grottos off Windy Pt Public are about 45FFW and there is a line that runs horizontally along the "wall" at about 30FFW. There's a cookie on that line above one of the bigger grottos.

What some people call the "pecan grove" in that area might start about 70FW with a few big trees at 60FFW. One has to say 'about' since the lake keeps dropping. :eyebrow: As James mentions the viz was a decent 8-10ft. Probably better in the early AM before OW classes up stream start kicking up the silt. Temps were in the low 80s for those depths 3 weeks ago. In places there is a fair amount of fishing line to get tangled up in so a cutting tool might be a good idea as is a good light, or 2, and a compass. Viz is OK, but it's dark.

To get back to the original question. I'll be at the gate of Windy Point Public (Wentz Park) when they open at 8AM for the normal Saturday AM dive. Not sure if Shawn, Mary, Dave etc. plan on being there, but I will. We usually solo - but we welcome anyone to join us you're brave enough to show up at that unholy hour on a Saturday morning. I'll need your bagel order by Friday at 6pm if you want a bagel.

Is it a good reel? ;)

Its on OK one, funny thing is, its spent its entire life on the bottom of travis, it just moves a little further out from time to time. It came back to the surface to get new line then back down into the mud it went. Its living a really poor existance!
