while it's not 8,000 Shaka Doug from the board was recently awarded a world record place for the largest log book ... Shaka Doug's Underwater Blog scroll down for pics of the logbook. Of course this is only for the last 10 years of his 22 year career, so he very well may have over 8,000 logged dives.

I have a friend that I estimate has over 20,000 dives (He doesn't talk about it much, so I had to do some math in my head based on comments he's made) Course most folks with that many dives don't log them all or talk about how experienced they are, it's just another day's work for them...

For a professional that is diving, even 2x per day, it would only take 13 years to rack up 8k dives... and there are lots of guys out there (and on the board here too) that have been diving professionally for much longer.

Aloha, Tim

The record for "Largest Log Book" is held by a military diver in the navy of Alexander the Great at the Siege of Tyre. He did, IIRC, 6 bell dives but recorded them on stone tablets 1.5" thick ...

That doesn't seem like a hard record to break. I'm just going to log my next seven dives on stones 1.55" thick. World record here I come!

My hubby (Resort instructor) used to get about 1000 dives a year for the last 11 years, not counting the dives in the 20+ years he dove before that.

I know of a guy named Wilt who had that many "girlfriends," he said. Then people started doing the math. But diving's a little different.;)

i know a diver who logged 5 dives in the time it took me to do my dry certification 45 min. i think he was in a rush to technically log as many dives as possible to qualify for rescue diving coarse, 10 min under 5 min topside

Knew a guy like that one time. He was in a hurry to get enough dives so he could get his divemaster patch and decal immeadiately. No, I'm not trying to start anything. I know it happens with all agencies. The worst part was the instructor knew and condoned it.

I understand if he works year round diving at a resort or something, I am saying this guy DOESN'T!

Do you know what his employment history was before you met him?

Wouldn't that be under water? :D

I overheard some guy I work with talking to some other guy and he claimed he had logged 8000 dives. I started doing the math in my head, even if he logged 80 dives a year it would take him 100 years! If he did 150 dives a year it would take him a little over 53 years! He's only 45 years old max! It just seemed outrageous to me. I also checked he is not on the PlatinumPro5000 list either. I was just wondering if anyone on this board really had that many dives and peoples thoughts on this subject.
Many DM's, working resorts, make 400 to 1000 dives a year. Do the math: 2 to 5 dives per day is 10 to 20 dives per week. The only question is how many weeks per year do they work? If they only work half the year and only do 3 dives per day, that is 390 dives.

If a DM works a Live-aboard that does 5 dives/day and takes 4 weeks per year off, then he/she could possibly make 1200 dives per year.

I'm not saying that he's not exaggerating. Divers are prone to do that. Some count every bath they take as a dive. But it is conceivable that an instructor or DM that works full time for a diving business could log the number of dives he claims.

All right. Who really cares? Who has time to log all those dives?
Hell, I did not even have time to read this entire thread. I am sure I can not afford the paper to log 8,000 dives. I only log recreational dives on vacation when I see something truely log worty.

The rest of my dives in wonderfull Lake Travis Texas, leading open water students around the rocks and teasing 3 foot cat fish looking for a sausage do not ever see paper.

Life is to short!
Jay
