If I have a problem with a dive operator - like a Dive Boat or Divemaster - particularly, internationally, is there any way to keep track of that or anywhere to report it?

I have heard the Certification Agencies keep track of this stuff, but what if was not dangerous but instead just bad service, or unprofessional or simply a rip-off?

Do Divers have any recourse?

I second El Oran's idea to post here. While there may not be any 'official' punishments, I know scubaboard is a resource used by a lot of divers, and your complaints won't be taken lightly.

With that said, make sure you present an unbiased complaint along with reasons. I know I would be greatful to know which dive ops to avoid in the future, and am sure others feel the same way.

To be honest, it is not for me but someone who had an issue. They are new to diving and weren't sure of how to address an issue, so they asked me as I have been a diver for years. But of course, i was at a loss myself... These "long tail" boards might just change the way things are done for the better..

I posted a review here of a dive op in Santa Cruz, Galapagos, and it was deleted. I think it was because I made a few critical comments about our experience with the company. I was not notified of any problem with my post (which was really pretty mild), but it was deleted.

Because my post was deleted, I wonder how many other posts may be deleted that share anything other than positive comments about dive ops. I thought this site was an objective source of information, but my deletion experience has made me question that assumption.

There are bad reviews of operators all the time.

Looking at your posts about the Galapagos you went in May? The board had a problem around then and lost weeks of posts sometime around May-June if I recall correctly. Perhaps you just got caught by that.

I hadn't heard of that also-a-scubaboard, interesting.

That would carry more impact than anything else. There is a problem when a person joins SB solely to post a bad report, so your friend should accept that upfront, but if we can post a good story, it will be appreciated. The Operator may be invited to answer. I had that happen to me once, which turned into his-word-my-word, but I caught a lot of flak from the Operator's many friends here. I'd still do it again, but it's not always fun. You might search SB first to see how popular the Operator is here? Only as an example, if it happen to be Cocoview on Roatan, forget it! They can do no wrong on this board and many others.

I think you're right. My other bad reviews have never had a problem.

You can certainly report them to all of the agencies that the Operator claims to be affiliated with, then place several phone calls over coming weeks to keep pressure on the investigation, as the last thing they really want to do is investigate a customer.

You can complain to the local authorities, local tourism organizations, etc. It may not matter, but sometimes feels good.

And there are other ideas, depending on the country and nature of the problem....??

Mostly, it's good to check here on the Operator in advance, but that will not guarantee anything - just a good indicator. In the end, you have to cover your own butt, stand up for whats due, and dispute charges thru your credit card company in many cases.

Thanks, if that's the case, I would feel better about the usefulness of scubaboard.
