Anyone know if the whalesharks trip are still finding hundreds of sharks? I am in Cozumel now and looking to do a whaleshark trip in a few days. Hoping to find bluewater with hundreds of whalesharks as happend a couple of weeks ago.

The whale shark season is still in full-force!! It should stay like this until the end of August so come on over!! I saw some videos last week that are ridiculous!! 2 snorkelers in the water and THREE whale sharks just lined up side to side right in front of them. Craziness!! There is a shop in town that does a special price on Wednesdays and if there are more than 6 people that day, they also send an extra photo/video guide and you get a free cd which is kinda neat. PM me if you need their contact. Have fun!!

My friends and I went on the Whale shark excursion on July 8th and encountered 50-60 individuals. We had a great time and really got to have a good look at these amazing creatures. They were in feeding mode and just idly coasted about scooping up their grub. They seemed oblivious to the human interlopers.

The excursions appear to be licensed and well-supervised and the area is now the Whale Shark World Biosphere Reserve. We had a very good briefing and they were adamant about not bothering the sharks, not touching them and keeping your distance. There was a Garda Parca vessel on scene. I had hoped to free dive but we were required to wear PFDs. Not clear whether this was for our safety or for the Sharks'. Our guide told me that if we had brought full wetsuits we could have skipped the PFDs but I don't know how they would have reacted to a weight belt!

They are selling this tour to any punter with the fare and with the potential for large seas in the open ocean you can count on a few folks chumming. The loaner gear is pretty sad stuff but as a diver you will have your own kit. A good pair of dive fins allows you to keep up with the sharks, which is a real plus.

The crew accommodated our enthusiasm and skill levels and we had nice long turns and ample opportunities to view the Whale Sharks.

These trips sound absolutely amazing. Who is offering them?
