Specifically, around the Playa Azul area? I know most of the boat diving is way south from here, but just wondering if there's anything to see around these parts for a casual check-out dive...

Carry your passport with you; you may need it when you get to Cuba! LOL

The currents on the north end of the island are pretty strong and if you get swept away, the odds are they won't find you. IMHO, you're better off shore diving further south or off a boat.
 
My wife and I stayed at the Coral Princess in January. She was pregnant at the time so she couldn't dive with me in the mornings but several times we snorkeled the sea wall in front of the Coral Princess and the adjoining properties. We saw a lot of life on the wall. It is only 20' so it would be a shallow dive but it would be a pleasant way to sped the afternoon.
