Anybody would like to help us this Sunday for the first cold water dive? Me and my son, 10 year old. Both recently (end of August) certified in warmer waters... Both feel comfortable in the water, need some more work on buoyancy control (well, at least for new divers). We are self-sufficient divers, we are not hoping for anyone to save our asses, we count on ourselfs. But thought that private guide for the first few dives would be a super good idea. Anyone?

I am VERY open for suggestions. Anything that includes Los Angeles, Ventura and Orange county:)

Well, LA and Ventura county preferred. I am in West Hills (very West of San Fernando Valley). Closer to home is a bonus.

The dive park on Catalina Island is a very good place to practice and get used to the colder waters. It is easy in/out. It is fairly protected from surf. There are facilities for food, bathroom, tank filling. It is where I, and many other instructors teach our classes.

For newbies, shore diving while fighting the waves to get in and out could be dangerous. It's a lot different fighting the surf when you have restricted mobility of wetsuit plus a lot more weight in addition to the heavy scuba gear than just heavy scuba gear as in warm water.

I already got plan on diving Saturday 15 OCT 2011 and Sunday doing chores or else I'd hook up with the both of you. If you don't want to do dive boat on Sunday then go to Casino Point in Catalina and do the shore diving there.

Another option is to do those dives as part of a class. Peak Performance Buoyancy sounds like a good idea.

I heard the conditions earlier this week in Malibu were pretty crappy in terms of visibility (i.e., hard to see gauges in front of your face), but I talked to a guy with a spear gun on the beach last night and he said it was pretty good, as in 10 feet or so. Maybe it was due to runoff from last week's rain. I wasn't in the water so can't vouch for conditions. You're not going to get very deep on most beach dives around you, so dialing in your buoyancy will be done in fairly shallow water (probably less than 30 feet). The good news is the water is about as warm as it ever gets and there's not a huge tidal change this weekend

I would expect visibility in Catalina to be better

Malibu divers on PCH and Sports Chalet in THousand Oaks can hook you up with local DMs who will do shore dives. The Catalina option is great and the local shops will hook you up with a local diver
