but I still think he's a thug.
I agree. Freaking punk.

I'm disappointed that the Wings picked him up.

Calder, on the other hand, should be a good pickup, although I was sad to see Williams go :(

Red Wings 4 Blackhawks 1 so what else did you except a Win. Looks like the trades were good ones. I glad we did not have to keep Calder. This Williams seems good for the Blackhawks. Too bad we could not of gotten Tood Bertuzzi i would of love that. Sorry guys i think he is a good player and once he is back on the ice i think he will really help Det a lot.

The list of recent players I have hated as a hockey fan includes the following:
Chris Chelios
Brett Hull
Dominik Hasek
Todd Bertuzzi

The one thing in common is that they have all become Detroit Red Wings. I have learned very quickly to deal with converting a hated player into a "teammate." In Bertuzzi's case, he is not the first Red Wing to have past legal issues either(see Dino Ciccarelli and Bob Probert). The fact remains that you have to put together the best team possible, and you need to do it objectively.

The Wings needed toughness and grit, and they not only went out and got it, but for a very good price. Calder and Bertuzzi for Williams and a few picks is a pretty damn good deal.

Yeah, I've been switching from website to website all day too. The reason I thought the Habs could have offered more for Smyth, was they have 3 1st round picks (with the pick for Rivet), 2 2nd round and a few 3rd this year, plus a lot of players they could have shopped also, like Perezhogen, Milroy, both Kostisyns, Plekanec, Grabowski, Chipchura, Locke etc. The Habs cupboards are pretty deep, with a lot of good players with plenty of upside, but I'm not sure any of them will be the sniper that Smyth is, plus he brings grit, size and leadership, all things the Habs could have used. I know that Gainey doesn't want to sell the future for a player today, but I believe you need a mix of leadership and youth, so he could have used some of that youth to bring in a vet like Smyth. As for Dipietro...if they had gotten Price in the deal, he would have made Dipietro a backup within 5 years. I think he's going to be the real deal.
As for Bertuzzi, I'm surprised at the deal, as I think the Wings stole him. As you're a Wings fan, congrats on not only that great pick up, but a great trade deadline overall.

I suspect one of two things regarding Smyth and the Habs:

1. As was mentioned on TSN, many GMs didn't even know Smyth would be available, so Gainey never got word.

2. If Gainey is interested in Smyth (and who wouldn't be), he probably felt the team would be best served by instead trying to sign him as a UFA this summer while keeping the cupboards full by not trading. This seems like a typical Gainey line of thinking.

To be honest, were I in Gainey's shoes, I might have thrown in Ryder, a prospect and a pick to get Smyth. Though it would probably suck to be Ryder as "the guy Edmonton got for Smyth!"

You know, I need to post more about diving than hockey on these boards!

Don't get me wrong -- I think Todd Bertuzzi is a good player and it's because of his physical play that he is a good player. But let's face it....what he did to Steve Moore that night would have gotten him thrown in jail if it had happened off the ice. :no

I agree with you 100%. That was a very ugly cheap shot that he took on Steve Moore and also cut his NHL Hockey career short.

The Red Wings have lost Henrik Zetterberg (please STOP calling him Hank, FOX Sports Detroit) for 2-3 weeks with a back injury, too.
