Who was it that hit Henry Boucha in the face with the butt-end of his stick and was arrested after the game and charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon? I believe this was in the early- to mid-1970s. I think it might have been Dave Forbes.
Dave Forbes. Was he suspended?

I'm fairly sure he was, but I can't remember for how long. I would have to do some research on that.

Here is a CBC story that lists suspensions
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/story/2000/03/08/s030790.html

It does not appear that Forbes got a suspension and his trial ended in a hung jury with the charges eventually being dropped.

Nope, it does not appear that the NHL really wants to do anything to clean up their act in this regard. Send in the goons.

I don't mind watching fights when guys tempers get fired up. When the coaches send out the goons to start wacking players and starting fights just for "motivational" purposes then it is wrong.

A good measuring stick for a suspension would be that the play commiting the foul would be suspended as long as the injured player is out of the line up.

My take is that as long as Boston fans are willing to buy seats and fill the arena, Bruin's ownership is happy to let them play in mediocrity. They have been willing to spend just enough to fill the seats, and have had some great names on their team, but unfortunately, Boston has become a a turnstill, with the great players going elsewhere to become superstars and/or win Cups ( Montreal has had it's share of that lately as well ;) )

Same can be said of Toronto, and those fans define blind faith!;) Chicago has terrible ownership as well, and those fans actually do stay away, but Wirtz still doesn't seem to care. I still can't believe the Hawks follow the rule of no local TV broadcast unless the game is sold out.

I tell all my buddy's that are Bruin fans, that the best thing they could do for the team is stop buying hats, jersey's etc, and stop buying tickets to the games. If that were to happen, and the B's play to an empty house, it affects ownership's bottomline, and then they either start spending to put people in the seats, or better yet, sells the team to someone who actually loves the game of hockey and wants to put a winning team on the ice.C-Dawg

Thats the line I've taken. I used to fly up to Boston to catch a game or two a year, and drop in the pro shop to spend a paycheck. Now, I have not been to a Bruins game or purchased Bruins regalia since Cam Neely Night on 1/12/04.

My wife is begging me to end my boycott. My t-shirts and sweatshirts are getting a little ratty.

I still live and die with the Bruins every game (a lot of dying) , but my wallet is shut pretty tight.

Boy you really hit the nail on the head. We call Bill Wirtz Cheap Dollar Bill. Oh boy were having a total of 5 home games this year on TV comcast sports net one more to go.The biggest crowd so far this year was of all games the Boston game dack in Dec.we had 19,505 that night. Now when Det comes to town it s always a sellout with standing room only . Not this year because the four home games that Det is here there on Tuesday and Thursday night s and not a friday or Saturday night as in years past. The UC holds 20,500 and with standing room only it s 22,500 and that is great to be at a game like that.

I presume you do go and watch them when they come here to play, right?

Definitely, I haven't missed a B's appearance in Dallas yet. However with the new NHL, I only have to worry about that every five years.:shakehead

If the Houston Penguins become a reality, I might be making a few road trips.

Anyone up for a "feel good" Hockey Story? This is an excerpt from my blog about a friend of mine's son:

LJ has two kids. Jake, 4 and Hannah is about 5-6 months. Jake is the reason or this story. LJ and her family and close to Philadelphia, PA and her husband (JP) and Jake are hockey fans. Of course, the Flyers are the NHL team for that area and little Jake had picked Michal Handzus as his favorite player. As with every major league sport, trades are inevitable and Handzus was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks before the 2006-2007 season started. Jake was crushed that he wouldn’t be able to see his favorite player in Philly anymore. Well, Jake and his father wrote a letter to Handzus and told him how upset Jake had been about the trade and they promised to come to Chicago to see him play. Handzus, in the meantime, had been injured and was recouping from knee surgery when he ran across Jake’s letter. Handzus actually called JP on his cell phone and asked if they were still coming to Chicago. When JP answered, “Yes,” Handzus said he would love to meet up with Jake.
During their trip to Chicago, Michal Handzus and his girlfriend met with Jake and his father. They all went to lunch together and then he took them to the Chicago locker room so they could meet the rest of the Blackhawks. LJ said Jake was so excited about the entire day. Handzus even gave Jake his cell phone number and email address so he could keep in touch. How cool is that???
You hear, almost daily, in the news about Professional Athletes getting in trouble, beating their wives, doing drugs, cheating, etc, etc, etc. Every time they mess up, it’s on the news. But, hardly ever, do you get hear a story that is actually “news worthy” because it’s a feel good story. People want dirt, people want others to do bad so their own lives don’t look so bad from a different perspective. I, for one, like the good news stories. This is a feel good story about a professional athlete that took time out of his schedule to help out a genuine fan. A real “nice guy” in the world of cry-baby, spoiled brat, millionaire athletes. (Note: I’m not talking about just hockey players, I’m lumping ALL professional athletic forums in that negative generalization) I know there are many “nice guys” in professional sports, so don’t think I dislike them all.. I’m just noting you see and hear more about the bad stuff they do than the good stuff.. This says a lot about Michal Handsuz. I don’t know the guy from Adam’s Housecat, but I’m a fan now because he’s “keeping it real.” Of course, no news media deemed this meeting worthy because Jake is just a regular kid. So, I'll use my own media outlet (this blog) to tell the story.
Salute to you Mr. Handzus. And, if my Thrashers can’t win Lord Stanley’s Cup, I hope your Blackhawks do. (Although, with the 2007 stats, it’s not going to happen for either of them this year)

Cool story.
This stuff happens all the time, but media outlets tend to ignore it and focus on the "dirt", with the reporters trying to make names for themselves. To read stuff like what you posted, you have to go to team websites, and read about their trips to local hospitals, opening practices to fans etc.
I'm assuming teams other than the Habs do that, as I read about this stuff on the Habs website. Saku Koivu funding a cancer treatment wing at a Montreal hospital was a story I remember reading. Personally, I'd prefer to read more stories like that. I read a story like Handsuz', and then a story about Sean Avery's most recent incident, and it makes it real easy to know the good guys from the bad, and also know the players you'd want to see traded to your team, and which one's should be avoided due to them being locker room cancer.
