Anyone from Florida Atlantic University or Broward Community College Dive?

there is supposedly a Divers club for FAU but it seems I can never get a hold of anyone.

Just trying to find out if there are more students like myself getting into diving or they are already divers :)

FAU's Dive Club kinda fell apart due to a lack of students interested in actually making the club RUN! All the existing club officers graduated, and FAU student apathy did the rest.

Sad but true.

Yeah the dive club never runs. The most diving you'll get out of fau is if you are in the ocean engineering program or if you are part of the human powered sub team. Which I believe has fallen apart as well. I already graduated so I'm not sure about how things are now, but check on the myFAU site they have a forum there. Or walk into the engineering building (in front of the library on the other side of that small parking lot) and ask in the ocean engineering office (first door on the right) if the club is still active.

FAU jumped right into bed with NAUI back in the '60's when sport diving was still in the pioneer phase. They had some kind of curriculum with all sorts of NAUI stuff in it - I can't remember what it led to, but I think it was some kind of dive management degree. I had no idea where FAU was in those days since I a kid stuck in Connecticut doing ice dives in a 3/8" wetsuit and wondering if I was ever going to get warm again.
I thought I had a lock on apathetic students when I taught college in Hawaii, but I guess it's gone universal.
Now I live a couple of miles south of FAU but it sounds like the diving stuff has left the pier.

Wait wait... a little cpr and its coming back to life. Version 697 of the Club is starting up again. I'll send PMs with contact info.

Intresting enough I have a few friends in the car community intrested in scuba diving and they are also part of the FAU alumni..
I guess these guys don't do any type of advertisement for recruits.. which probably is the cause of their demise.

But either way hopefully I should be able to bring around myself and my friend so thats a solid 2 plus another 2-3 guys as well

Thanks guys , you been all very helpful :)

I attempted to join the dive club. The officers were pathetic when it came to diving. They refused to return e-mails and would not answer questions. The only information I received was a letter advertising classes by a member (and the advisor, I believe). The prices were not what one would expect from a University Dive Club. The forum was also worthless.

I gave up quickly on the FAU dive club and decided to dive with Conch's and friends instead. Good luck with the dive club.

Cheers,
Jamie

I sent you a pm since I have some questions.

I thought that by joining a school dive club it would be cheaper to get certfied.

The $489 one is for the guy instructing us to work with our work schedule ( this is a group rate since all of us from the pharmacy dept are learning to scuba) and is coming down to one of our houses for the pool session.
as a college student I must say I have a budget ( and plan on getting some good equipment too) and I am very intrested on the school program

anyhow again thank you all

You've posted two course announcements. One doesn't have anything to do with the Club. The second is mine. As you can see, the class I'm offering for the Club is about 40% of the cost of the first course you posted. Its also significantly less than anything that I teach privately. IOW, if I offer a class for students, its way cheaper than what I typically offer and what's available in the community.

Please understand that folks who offer things through this and other clubs do so as volunteers. Students who run student clubs do this in their spare time. If classes and events work out for you, that's great. But take it easy on folks who volunteer. As I mentioned in a previous post and in PM, the club is being revived.
