I also feel these anxiety attacks can be a blessing in disguise, specially at the depth Rick had it...If you dive enough you will likely experience one of those at depth, you NEED to work trough it...
I think Diver0001 had a set MO for these things...something like: breath-look at spg-breath-look at depthmeter-breath-look at buddy-breath...You need to focus on something that takes your immediate attention away from the anxiety...at least that´s what I´ve done the few times it´s happend to me...

Regarding stops...V-planner let´s you move your time at shallow stops (10-30ft) without penalty...It does the same for the stops at any gas-switchpoint, that I´ve tried, without penalizing you for it(actually shortens deco sometimes) ...
