In addition to going slow, make sure you master trim and being neutral from the start. Kneeling will not give you confidence. I would rather a student float on the surface breathing on Scuba than kneel or lie on the bottom. You have to get used to the balance. Most can't do it in only one pool session, a few require more than two sessions. A good instructor will let you progress at your speed. No need to force it.
